  • For patients on dialysis, time is valuable — every moment counts. In-clinic dialysis has long been the default for care, but it means that patients spend time and money, travelling to and from appointments. Home dialysis is changing that by offering patients across the region with a different option. Experts at Kingston Health Sciences Centre provide vital equipment and training so patients can safely and independently perform their own treatments at home, for free. Combined with some additional, optional help from the Home Dialysis Assistance Program, KHSC is reducing barriers to home-base care. • At KHSC, we are proud to be home to more than 100 dedicated #RespiratoryTherapists (RTs), along with dozens more students, who provide life-changing care across our many clinics and inpatient units, as well as in specialized areas like the Ontario Ventilator Equipment Pool, Pulmonary Function Test Lab and Sleep Lab. From newborns to seniors, RTs are essential in caring for patients with acute and chronic breathing conditions. Whether they're managing ventilators in the ICU, helping patients with asthma or COPD, or ensuring community members have the support they need for long-term ventilation at home, our RTs make a difference every day. They’re experts in mechanical ventilation, airway stabilization, oxygen therapy, and patient education. RTs also play a vital role in sleep studies and helping patients manage respiratory health through personalized care plans. In honour of RT week, help show some love to our Respiratory Therapists as we thank them for the critical role they play in helping our patients breathe easier and live better! #RTWeek2024 #ThankYouRTs #RespiratoryTherapy #ygk

  • On any given day at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), there are around 100 patients – from newborns to elders – receiving intensive care. Through it all – the gradual healings, amazing recoveries and devastating losses – there are highly skilled intensive-care professionals doing their best for patients and their families at critical moments. ✨ This Canadian INTENSIVE CARE WEEK, we celebrate the hearts and minds of the doctors, nurses, social workers, patient care assistants, therapists and others who specialize in caring for people with severe or life-threatening illnesses and injuries. ✨ Whether people are admitted to #myKHSC intensive care units directly from the emergency department, operating rooms, other units or community hospitals, the compassionate care they receive involves close monitoring of vital bodily functions to sustain life and support recovery. Not only is the care distinct from what is delivered on other hospital units, but three of the five units at KHSC providing intensive care are unique in southeastern Ontario, offering the highest level of care to the most critically ill patients throughout the region. Today, like every day, our intensive care teams will be doing everything they can to help people feel a little bit more comfortable emotionally and physically, make important decisions that help them recover another day, and, yes, sometimes help people pass on with as much dignity as possible.💖 #ThankYou 🙏 for all you do! #CICW2024

  • As we wrap up #HealthcareSecurityAndSafetyWeek, we’re giving a shout-out to our Protection Services team. This team is made up of more than 110 employees who work around the clock to help keep our community safe! Ever wonder what kind of work they do to help keep our hospitals #YGK running smoothly? KGH & HDH Sites: Our security pros patrol our hospital sites and can usually be found in key areas like the Emergency Department, Urgent Care Centre, at our main entrances and in units and clinics across our buildings. Most often, they’re patrolling and/or responding to emergency codes or incidents, but you can also regularly find them interacting with - and providing help to - patients, visitors, and KHSC staff. Security Operations Centre: It's the nerve center for our Protection Services team. Our security staff monitor cameras, control access to our buildings and work hard to dispatch the right people to the right places during emergencies. Courier Team: Not all team members are out on patrol — some are busy transporting life-saving medical specimens, equipment, and materials between our hospital facilities. Whether they're on the frontline, or behind the scenes, this team is working hard to keep #MyKHSC patients, staff, and visitors safe each day. Help us thank them for all their hard work!

If you've ever had surgery at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), you’ve likely benefited from the expertise of the #myKHSC medical device reprocessing (MDR) team.🙌 These dedicated technicians make sure the surgical instruments used during your surgery are not only dependable and effective but also meticulously cleaned and prepared to use.✨ 🎉 This #MDRweek, we’re celebrating the invaluable contributions of MDR specialists, who quietly operate behind the scenes, reprocessing reusable medical items. Without their diligent work, many frontline procedures would simply not be possible. While the majority of their work happens behind closed doors, it does not go unnoticed. We’re grateful for their commitment to quality health care, infection prevention and control, and ensuring our operating rooms are fully equipped.💖 For everything the MDR department does to support patients and our health-care teams, thank you!👏

  • Not 1️⃣ , not 2️⃣ , but 3️⃣ awards have been given to Kingston Health Science Centre (KHSC) for its commitment to organ and tissue donation! 💚 Thank you Trillium Gift of Life Network for recognizing the dedication of #myKHSC teams that are making a difference in the lives of those in need. 💚 These awards would not be possible without the generosity of patients and families, and the compassion of our amazing staff, doctors and volunteers. 🙌 🏆 For the seventh year, KHSC received the Provincial Conversion Rate Award. Once again, exceeding Ontario Health’s target conversion rate by more than 14 per cent. KHSC’s current conversion rate is 72 per cent, which led to 60 organs donated for transplant, saving 54 lives, and 47 tissue donors, enhancing the lives of many others. 🏆 For the second year, KHSC was presented with the Award of Excellence for four or more consecutive years of successfully converting potential organ donors into actual donors at a minimum of 63 per cent of the time. 🏆 For the second year, KHSC was recognized with the Provincial Eligible Approach Rate Award. This award is given to hospitals that facilitate a donation discussion between Ontario Health and eligible patients and families 90 per cent of the time or more. KHSC’s current eligible approach rate is 97 per cent. On average, 1,400 people in Ontario are waiting for a lifesaving organ, and thousands more need a transformative tissue transplant. Every three days someone dies while they wait for their gift of life. Register at beadonor.ca to #BeADonor, and speak with your family about your wishes. One organ donor can save eight lives and enhance up to 75 more through tissue donation. 💖 #OrganDonation #GiftOfLife #MakeADifference #ONhealth
