Provide empathetic support that builds resiliency individually and within our First Responder and Military Families.

About us

Our Peace Officers, Fire Fighters, Emergency Medical Services, 911 Dispatch and Military Personnel face frustrating and devastating situations on the workfront and then find themselves working hard to find a balanced life perspective on the homefront. Our Mission: Provide empathetic and confidential support that builds resiliency individually and within our First Responder and Military Families. Our Vision: That all First Responder and Military Personnel have user friendly access to resources to build resiliency as an individual and/or as a family. Our Values: Family, Empathy, Diversity and Inclusivity, Confidentiality, Collaboration, Integrity Founded in 1997 by a group of Calgary and Edmonton Police Officers who felt there was a gap between the professional life and the transition to the home front. There was a period within a year of several suicides within policing in Alberta and discovery of situations where First Responders were having difficulties in coming home because of the stresses they were carrying from work. The sights, sounds and carnage have a way of building up within the human mind that is difficult to shake off. Sleeping in their vehicles and couch surfing at a buddies basement became a disturbing trend. Over the years, the agencies that represent Police, Fire, EMS, 911 Dispach and Military have developed different types of Peer Support resources and instruction to better assist ways of coping to the challenges of the profession. Legacy Place Society is the CONFIDENTIAL home away from home that supports First Responders and Military Personnel individually or as a family in providing accommodations during times of family crisis within marriages or for medical attention (Counselling, cancer, occupational stress injury, post traumatic stress, surgery, etc).

Suicide prevention is more than just ensuring financial stability and offering support—it’s about addressing the complexities of human experience and mental health on every level. While financial security and housing stability are essential, they are just pieces of a much larger puzzle. True suicide prevention means: - Destigmatizing mental illness and mental health care: Breaking down barriers of shame and silence so people can seek help without fear of judgment or discrimination. - Expanding access to mental health care: Ensuring that therapy, counseling, and crisis support are readily available, regardless of location or socioeconomic status. - Fostering inclusive communities: Creating spaces where everyone, including LGBTQ2S+ individuals, feels accepted and understood, knowing that family and community support play a crucial role in mental well-being. - Building stronger family dynamics: Empowering families with parenting skills and relationship-building tools to support youth, especially when they face challenges. - Encouraging open, honest conversations: Normalizing discussions around mental health, showing that it’s okay not to be okay, and encouraging early intervention. Suicide prevention begins with meeting basic human needs—because when someone is struggling to secure food, housing, or healthcare, their mental well-being is at serious risk. But it goes deeper than that. Prevention is about recognizing that without a foundation of stability and security, it’s difficult for individuals to focus on their mental health. This movement is about creating a culture where no one feels isolated or beyond hope. It’s not just a single action—it’s a collective effort of policy, empathy, education, and connection. When we come together as a community, we can turn prevention into a shared responsibility. #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness #HolisticSupport #DestigmatizeMentalHealth

On this day, 23 years ago, 246 people went to sleep, ready for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep, prepared for another day at work. 343 firefighters went to sleep, anticipating their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep, ready for their morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep, prepared to start their morning shift. None of them saw past 10:00 a.m. on September 11, 2001. In a single moment, life can change forever. As you live and cherish the breaths you take today, and as you prepare for tomorrow, hold your loved ones close, appreciate every moment, and never take a single second for granted. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the first responders, near and far, who sacrifice so much to keep our communities safe. #NeverForget #911Anniversary #FirstResponders #ThankYouHeroes #September11 #HonorAndRemember #AlwaysInOurHearts

Today is Firefighters’ National Memorial Day. On this Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, we reflect on the selfless courage of those firefighters who died carrying out their duties. Whether battling the worst wildfires in our history or responding to emergencies within urban or rural settings, firefighters epitomize bravery and self-sacrifice. They brave unimaginable situations to keep our communities and our environments safe. And even after they return home, many suffer from physical or mental wounds. On behalf of the Legacy Place Family, we thank all firefighters for answering the call to service. To families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty: we will honour their memory with you. Their courage will continue to inspire us.

Since 2010, Legacy Place has welcomed nearly 100 Veterans and Military Personnel who served in Afghanistan into our Legacy Place Houses, providing over 5,000 nights of support. These veterans often face challenges such as post-traumatic stress injuries, strained relationships, and the need for ongoing care at Operational Stress Injury Clinics. On September 10th in Calgary at Canyon Meadows Theater, Legacy Place Society is offering a limited number of pre-purchased tickets to see Fallen Heroes; Their Journey Home, a powerful documentary about the Canadian Armed Forces' mission in Afghanistan. This film highlights the impact of the war on Canadians and honors the courage of our men and women in uniform. To participate in the ticket draw, please contact info@legacyplacesociety.com. We hope this film will inspire Canadians to see themselves as leaders in supporting our military, strengthening the bond between civilians and soldiers. With this bond, we believe there will be greater generosity toward causes that support our veterans. Please note that ‘Fallen Heroes’ is a powerful and emotional film that may be triggering for some viewers. Background: Over 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members served in Afghanistan over a 14-year campaign, making it Canada’s longest war. However, few Canadians fully understand why we were there and why it mattered. Fallen Heroes is the first installment of a planned 10-part documentary series preserving this important history for future generations. Afghanistan was the most significant operation for the Canadian Armed Forces in two generations, placing Canada at the center of global military efforts. Alongside our NATO partners, Canada played a pivotal role, commanding combat operations in Kandahar and securing critical positions in the Persian Gulf. Our soldiers were recognized globally for their bravery, skill, and unique values, which they carried into the field, building strong relationships with Afghan partners. Canada lost 159 soldiers and 4 civilians in Afghanistan, with many more returning home with physical and emotional scars. Since then, over 200 Canadian soldiers have taken their own lives. This documentary series aims to honor their sacrifices and ensure that their stories are not forgotten. https://lnkd.in/gEjX6Uuh #Veterans #CanadianForces #AfghanistanWar #FallenHeroes #LegacyPlace #MilitarySupport #PTSD #CanadianMilitary #MilitaryHistory #SupportOurTroops #DocumentaryFilm #HonourAndSacrifice #CanadaRemembers #MilitaryService #NeverForget
