The goal is ambitious. The path is clear. The timing is urgent. Last weekend, nearly 300 cancer researchers, clinicians and patients came together for The Terry Fox Research Institute’s 10th Scientific Meeting. Inspired by Terry Fox, we're creating a pan-Canadian Network to accelerate #PrecisionMedicine for Cancer.
About us
The Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network is the realization of a long-standing vision of the Terry Fox Research Institute. Inspired by Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, the network represents a powerful collaborative platform that aims to close the gap between research in the lab and patient care in the clinic. Just as Terry Fox united Canadians with his run and dream to end cancer, the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network aims to unite our cancer researchers to pursue that same goal with precision medicine.

🔬 Enhancing Treatment for #AcuteLeukemia 🔬 Acute leukemia remains difficult to treat, with fewer than 20 percent of patients surviving a decade. There is an urgent need for new treatments that are more effective, less toxic and less financially burdensome. With $7.5M in funding from a #TerryFox New Frontiers Program Project Grant, Dr. Aly Karsan (BC Cancer) and his team will explore how epigenomic changes – chemical modifications that don’t alter the genetic code but affect gene activity – influence leukemia’s behaviour and treatment response. The team will build on their previous work, using cutting-edge techniques to explore why these cancers don't respond to current therapies in hopes of improving outcomes for patients. Learn more about how Dr. Karsan’s team is advancing #leukemia research. https://lnkd.in/g_WNvHxa #CancerResearch #NoMatterWhat

The Terry Fox Run is happening this Sunday, Sept. 15 in communities across Canada! Keep an eye out for researchers funded by the The Terry Fox Research Institute, the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network and the Digital Health and Discovery Platform (DHDP), who will be attending runs across the country wearing their purple shirts! When you see them, don't hesitate to ask them about their research and how the The Terry Fox Research Institute is advancing cancer research and care in Canada! #TeamCanadaOfCancerResearch
In a recent interview with CTV Winnipeg News, Dr. Sachin Katyal, Senior Scientist at CancerCare Manitoba and Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba, shared compelling insights on the impact of the #TerryFoxRun and how it helps fight cancer in Manitoba. A key takeaway from the interview was Dr. Katyal’s belief that "research is care." By connecting researchers and clinicians, the Terry Fox Run helps translate the latest scientific discoveries into continued care for patients. Join us and support the Terry Fox run for cancer research on Sunday, September 15 at Assiniboine Park. 🔬 Dr. Madhuri Koti's Team Receives $2.4M to Improve #BladderCancer Treatment and Outcomes 🔬 Bladder cancer is the fifth most common cancer in Canada, with 12,300 Canadians diagnosed in 2023. While Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy is the primary treatment for early-stage bladder cancer, it only works for half of patients. With $2.4 million in funding from a #TerryFox New Frontiers Program Project Grant (PPG), Dr. Madhuri Koti (Queen's University) will lead a team of researchers to better understand how BCG therapy stimulates the immune system’s anti-tumour response in some patients and why it fails in others. By doing so, they aim to identify which patients are unlikely to respond, so they can be treated with alternative therapies. This #TeamScience grant will also train the next generation of cancer researchers. "This [funding] program is unique in that it allows trainees to learn from each other's projects and apply that knowledge. We aim to equip them with the tools needed to carry this research forward, with the hope of reducing the incidence and recurrence rates of bladder cancer, ultimately improving the lives of these patients," says Dr. Koti. She expresses her gratitude to everyone who supported this Terry Fox research grant, including donors to the The Terry Fox Foundation. “We are extremely honoured at Queen’s to be awarded this PPG and to continue research on a treatment that started here more than 50 years ago," says Dr. Koti. "A huge thank you to everyone who supported this important work.” Learn more 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gwDcBjSd #CancerResearch #NoMatterWhat

🔬 Dr. Brad Nelson’s Team Receives $2.4M to Develop New Immunotherapy Approaches for #OvarianCancer 🔬 Treating high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) remains a significant challenge, with current therapies achieving limited long-term success. However, with $2.4M in funding from a #TerryFox New Frontiers Program Project Grant, Dr. Brad Nelson and his team are advancing research on how the immune system can more effectively fight HGSC. By studying the "immune village," they aim to develop treatments more effective than current options, which only see about 15 percent of patients surviving 10 years or more. “This PPG funding allows us to take a fresh look at the problem," says Dr. Nelson (BC Cancer). “For us, it’s about coming up with new ideas for immunotherapy that we can move into clinical trials. Over the next four years, we want to go beyond generating ideas and making discoveries to developing actual therapies that can reach patients.” Learn more about how Dr. Nelson’s team is improving treatments for patients with ovarian cancer. https://lnkd.in/gTymhbV3 #CancerResearch #TeamScience #NoMatterWhat
