This week, the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network team met with Government leaders and MPs from all parties in Ottawa to share the latest advancements in our journey toward transforming cancer research and care in Canada. Led by the Terry Fox Research Institute and Terry Fox Foundation, and made possible through an initial $150 million commitment from Health Canada | Santé Canada, the Network unites patients, researchers, clinicians and administrators from institutions across the country under a single vision to advance precision oncology for the benefit of cancer patients. 🔬 Why are more young adults getting colorectal cancer? 🔬 The trend is worrying: colorectal cancer diagnoses in younger adults have doubled since the mid-90s. Even more worrying? The fact that we're not completely sure why this is happening. To better understand this trend and to start finding ways to reverse it, the Network is funding a team of researchers at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre who are working with the Ontario Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry to collect powerful data that can help answer this question. Our Terry Fox world is smaller and sadder today with news of the death of Bill Vigars, one of the original members of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. As the Public Relations Manager for the Canadian Cancer Society, Bill was assigned to Terry’s run to generate media attention and plan fundraising events. He saw Terry at his most powerful, vulnerable, and emotional. Bill succeeded at making Terry a relatable, accessible human being, “no different than anyone else… no better and… no less,” as Terry said. This was the greatest gift he could give his beloved friend: a reminder that Terry was just one of us.   The Fox family, Terry Fox Foundation staff, and Terry Foxers across Canada share our deepest sympathy with Bill’s wife Sherry, children Patrick and Kerry Ann, stepson Jordan, and grandson Clive. We will be forever better people for knowing you, Bill. ❤️

Precision oncology enables personalized treatments based on the molecular characteristics of each patient’s tumour. A new study from the Personalized OncoGenomics (POG) program (BC Cancer, Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, The University of British Columbia) shows that long-read sequencing can provide unique insights into these molecular characteristics. Led by Dr. Steven Jones, the study was published online yesterday in Cell Genomics and features long-read sequencing data from 189 patient tumour samples. The authors demonstrate how this state-of-the art technology can be applied to better understand cancer biology and support clinical decisions. “This dataset will be an important resource to support precision oncology research based on long-read sequencing,” says co-first author Dr. Kieran O'Neill, highlighting that all data from the study, including analytical tools, are being made available to the research community to promote further research. “With the support of the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network, Canadian researchers can incorporate new technologies to push the boundaries of cancer research and improve the lives of cancer patients in Canada and around the world,” says Dr. Jones. ▶️ Learn more about the study here: https://lnkd.in/gMrgYPcV The Terry Fox Research Institute, The Terry Fox Foundation, Health Canada | Santé Canada
