    President and CEO, AdvaMed

One week ago, we wrapped up The MedTech Conference, and what an incredible few days we had in Toronto. Now, as we close the books on the meeting, I have been reflecting on how much progress we have made, not only with the Conference but more importantly as the medtech community.   It was the largest MedTech Conference ever, with 4,350 attendees. The largest number of countries represented ever: 48. The largest number of participating companies ever: 1,926. And the most exciting gathering of medtech innovators in the world.     The big turnout showed the strength of the U.S.-Canada relationship in medtech innovation. The leadership of Kevin Lobo, Chair and CEO of Stryker, as co-chair of the Conference was critical to its success, as was that of fellow co-chair James Brodie, General Manager, Canada, Johnson & Johnson MedTech. Holly Sheffield, President of CooperSurgical, led the development of an outstanding program. And we certainly couldn’t have pulled it off without the leadership of Nicole DeKort, President and CEO of Medtech Canada, and her stellar team.    A special thanks goes to the amazing leaders at AdvaMed that helped execute this extraordinary event: Jennifer Brearey, Ray Briscuso, Sarah Arth, CAE, and Erin Lee, along with their incredible teams.   But The MedTech Conference is about much more than attendee numbers and the AdvaMed team. It’s about people – the 4,350 people who demonstrated hands-on medtech in the exhibit halls, who joined panels, digging into the issues necessary to promote medtech innovation; and the patients, both onsite telling their stories and the millions more worldwide whose lives are made better because of medtech.     In my keynote welcome address, I reflected back on the tremendous advancements in medtech over AdvaMed’s 50-year history and previewed some of the miraculous medtech innovations yet to come. I was happy to celebrate the thousands of people in the room and their counterparts worldwide who wake up every day with a passion to help patients. They make a huge difference in so many lives in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide. Their energy, intelligence, and problem-solving skills inspire all of us in #medtech to do our best work. I’m grateful for their dedication, whether on stage in Toronto or behind the scenes. Every bit of it matters to patients.     We left energized and inspired to continue our work representing medtech over the next year. Thank you to the AdvaMed team for the tremendous amount of work that went into this record-breaking event. You set the bar for next year!    I hope to see everyone again along with many new faces at the next MedTech Conference in San Diego, October 5-8, 2025!

Cervical cancer remains a significant health concern in Canada, particularly among remote and underserved populations where incidence rates are three times higher compared to the general population. With the recent authorization, the BD Onclarity™ HPV assay, is the first to receive Health Canada approval to allow women to self-collect vaginal samples for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing at home.

Thanks to our friends at AdvaMed for putting together an amazing edition of The MedTech Conference last week in Toronto! It was a real pleasure working with the conference planning team and our partners across Canada to help ensure strong representation from the Canadian medtech ecosystem at this conference. It was the first time the conference was held outside of the U.S., and we were thrilled that over 1,700 Canadians attended—helping to make this the largest edition of the conference yet! In addition to the incredible number of Canadian attendees, the conference also hosted the sold-out Canadian Pavilion (which had to be expanded to meet the high demand!) featuring over 60 innovative medtech companies and industry partners. This is real testament to the thriving medtech ecosystem in our country, and the connections made at this conference will immensely contribute to advancing patient care. Special thanks to local dignitaries from the government of Ontario for their significant presence at the conference including Premier Doug Ford, Minister Sylvia Jones, Minister Victor Fedeli and Minister Nina Tangri. Your government continues to be a strong champion of the medtech industry and your announcement at the conference of Phase 2 of the province’s Life Sciences Strategy will break down barriers for innovations that can improve patient outcomes and support health system efficiency, while growing the critically important medtech sector in the province.

Patients are at the heart of the work of medtech companies and the stories at The MedTech Conference Patient Pavilion are powerful reminders of the impact of this industry. This morning it was great to hear the inspiring story of Canadian Olympic canoe sprinter, Connor Fitzpatrick, who was successfully treated for atrial fibrillation and was able to compete at the Paris games. Thanks to Connor for sharing his story and to our Board Chair James Brodie for moderating this session.
