This collaboration will integrate SpecTIR’s hyperspectral data solutions with Metaspectral’s Fusion AI Platform to create an interactive Sandbox. This Sandbox allows users to explore SpecTIR data collected near Yerington, Nevada within the Fusion AI environment. Our goal is to enhance the use of hyperspectral data by combining AI technologies with SpecTIR’s expertise.     BREAKING: Our payload specially designed for live hyperspectral streaming from space, OPTICA, is now spaceborne! Stay tuned for rendez-vous with the ISS on the wee hours of August 6, and installation on Voyager Space's External Platform (NREP) shortly thereafter. Metaspectral's mission is to demonstrate hyperspectral insights in real-time. Given that a single scene can be ~1GB in size, that is no easy feat! Godspeed OPTICA!

    OPTICA: Metaspectral’s Own Space-borne Hyperspectral Imager It’s been 2 years in the making, but we’re finally here! We’re excited to announce that OPTICA, Metaspectral’s own payload built in collaboration with HySpeed Computing and Nanoracks (now Voyager Space), is ready for launch. It’s scheduled to go to the International Space Station (ISS) on Northrop Grumman’s NG-21 commercial cargo resupply mission this Saturday, 3rd of August 2024. Liftoff time is scheduled at 8.28am PT. As a technology demonstrator, OPTICA is carrying a state-of-the-art hyperspectral sensor (VNIR with 224 spectral bands) and Metaspectral’s payload computers, able to capture, compress and stream hyperspectral data losslessly. We have developed a proprietary implementation of the CCSDS-123-b-2 standard, which lets us compress hyperspectral data up to 60% losslessly, and up to 90% in the near-lossless configuration. In addition to the main mission of space qualifying our technology, we will also be capturing data for two main purposes: quantifying wildfire risk, as well as trying to detect plastics in oceans. We will be sharing more updates as we downlink data in the next few weeks.     Technical Note: Atmospheric compensation (or more generally, atmospheric correction) is a technique that is used to remove the artifacts introduced by the atmosphere when light travels through it. This is especially important in hyperspectral imaging, where continuous bands are captured for a given wavelength range. In fact, this is the primary way that we would convert a radiance datacube into a reflectance datacube. Some prominent algorithms here are QUAC (Quick Atmospheric Correction) and FLAASH (Fast Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercubes). But the downside of these two algorithms? They are patented, and you need to pay to access it. A great alternative is "Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S)" library. This is the European equivalent of MODTRAN, and is freely available. Even better, it comes with Python bindings on the "Py6S - A Python interface to 6S" library.
