  • 📢 Big News for Metro Vancouver! An agreement between the governments of Canada and British Columbia will provide $250 million in federal funding over five years for the early phase of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Projects. “We’re grateful for the Government of Canada’s support for this essential infrastructure project, which is driven by a need to meet updated federal wastewater treatment regulations and accommodate growth,” said Mike Hurley, Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors. “Local governments have limited options to fund infrastructure upgrades, and this support helps us continue to protect public and environmental health.” This funding matches the Province’s 2023 contribution of $250 million, and will help towards improving wastewater treatment while enabling housing growth and densification. It’s a major step toward protecting public health, local ecosystems, and the surrounding coastal waters. Learn more about this critical investment in our region’s future: https://lnkd.in/gKtAGHdd

The region had a 65% recycling rate in 2023 — that means almost two thirds of material generated in Metro Vancouver is recycled rather than disposed. The amount of garbage produced per person is now 420 kilograms per year, down 26% since 2011. Metro Vancouver is responsible for waste reduction and recycling planning for the region and operating a series of solid waste facilities. Driven by our dedication to environmental stewardship and providing cost-effective, accessible waste management services, we: ⬇️ Prioritize waste reduction ♻️ Enhance reuse and recycling systems 🌄 Ensure the environmentally responsible management and disposal of non-recyclable waste Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gJdqx3KD Watch "The Story of Solid Waste:” https://lnkd.in/gfzU7fvC
