Performance Psychology and Pop Culture Podcast Mini-Series with Alex & Mat Ep 2: Swamp Kings and the Glorification of Abusive Leadership. It’s both maddening and unsurprising that a show like Swamp Kings celebrates only the toxic aspects of sport and masculinity. The headline quote of the show is “I treat my superstars like superstars and my shit like shit.” Coach Urban Meyer smiles with satisfaction at the quote and the football players on the show, which are only the superstars, chuckle at the mention of this famous line as they try not to show how they truly feel about it. It’s an extreme example of the kinds of old-school “suck it up princess” leaders that are still extremely prevalent in sports, business, and every place you can find your local “competitive at” human beings. Victory at any cost might be horrifically true in war, but it has no place in other high-pressure environments. If you haven't seen the show or don’t have the hours to invest in it, take part in this 30-minute roast of how not to lead. #swampkings #sportpsychology #psychology #coaching #athlete #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth

Sometimes walls aren't there as a barrier to achieving your goals, but instead as a reminder that rest is crucial to achieving your goals. So, no matter where you are in your journey through mental health, we at Mindbuffs are ready to help you end the stigma. We're here to listen when you're ready. #bellletstalk #bellletstalk💙

Purpose and Identity Podcast Mini-Series with Nick & Mat Ep 2: The Adventures of a Pro Hockey Player with Nick Johnson Part 2 During part 2 of this conversation, Nick and Mat discuss the conundrum of one’s fixed identity within sport and how it impacts a player’s progression through competitive sports. There are a million books on “how to be successful” written by millionaires and famous people who completely leave out the two most important variables: Who you know and who you are. The latter is something far more within our control. In this episode, we discuss our youth sports experiences and examine the relationship between identity and things like motivation, competition, ‘pecking orders’, and personality. We also take a closer look at what, if any, changes we need to make as we progress through the ranks of sport and business. Lastly, we briefly discuss the realities of retirement and the unavoidable identity crisis that ensues.   Interestingly enough, Mat and Nick uncover positive youth sport experiences as inspiring forces that can actually uphold motivation while an athlete progresses through competitive ranks. Captivating stories of team dynamics and ‘pecking orders’, a discussion on how much one’s approach actually needs to change as you progress through (seemingly more pressure filled) levels, and the dynamics of transitioning away from sport and athlete identity; fill out this novel take on our ideas of ultra commitment to sport. #sportpsychology #sports #nhlalumni #nhl #hockey #identity #psychology #mentalhealth #mensmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness
