🤔Why should we study microplastics in our rivers? In this episode of "Ask a Scientist," that’s the question we asked Jeremiah Bryksa, lead researcher of our microplastics project. With rivers serving as major pathways for microplastics, our team is working to quantify these particles in the North Saskatchewan River, creating a crucial baseline for future research. The microplastics project is just one piece of our Plastics Research in Action (PRIA) partnership with Heartland Polymers, aimed at advancing plastics reuse and recycling on a global scale. Curious about our projects? You can get more details of our PRIA projects here! 👇 https://bit.ly/4eLJsWA https://bit.ly/3Uo196P

Microplastics – those tiny but impactful particles – are an emerging environmental contaminant that’s gaining attention worldwide. Yet, accurately measuring them, especially in freshwater systems with high suspended solids, is no small feat. Over the last 10 years, we have partnered with Heartland Polymers through the Plastics Research in Action (PRIA) initiative. Together, we’ve developed and refined groundbreaking methodologies for sampling and measuring microplastics in the North Saskatchewan River. This effort represents the most extensive examination of microplastics in Alberta’s environment to date👏 Hear from Jeremiah Bryksa and Patric McGlashan at 10:35 in the Beatty Room at #REMTech2024 where they discuss their research and findings.
