The growing demand for responsibly sourced metals and minerals has led to a proliferation of standards that help companies demonstrate their commitment to responsible practices. However, this has also led to a complex and sometimes confusing landscape of standards for customers, communities, investors, and other stakeholders. The Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative has brought together the four existing standards of ICMM, The Copper Mark (for which we are partners) , World Gold Council and Mining Association of Canada to help address this complexity and promote continual improvement of environmental, social and governance practices along individual metals’ value chains – from mining to smelting, refining and beyond. Embracing responsible practices means adopting a full life-cycle approach to metals and minerals production that promotes positive contributions to society, addresses its impacts on people and the environment, and supports progress to a circular economy. THE CORAL GREENHOUSE - 🌊✨ Introducing Australia’s First Underwater Museum: The Coral Greenhouse ✨🌊 We are thrilled to highlight in our latest Nickel Magazine the Coral Greenhouse, Australia’s first and only underwater museum, created by the acclaimed British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. This incredible installation holds the Guinness World Records for the largest underwater art structure, weighing an impressive 165 tons. Constructed with corrosion-resistant Type 316 (S31600) nickel-containing stainless steel and pH-neutral materials, the Coral Greenhouse rests on the bottom of John Brewer Reef, fully submerged under 16 meters of seawater and reaching a height of 12 meters. Taylor’s biomorphic design reflects nature’s patterns and aims to bridge various fields of study, including marine science, coral gardening, and underwater art and architecture. He emphasizes that this project provides a fresh perspective on understanding the Great Barrier Reef and its ecology. 🌊 To ensure durability against adverse weather, the structure features a robust cement base and integrated cyclone tethers. Its triangular cross-sections are engineered for stability with a low center of gravity, minimizing resistance to wave energy. The elevated beam sections create an ideal substrate for filter-feeding organisms and schooling fish, while intricate matrices provide shelter for smaller fish and glass enclaves offer refuge for octopuses and sea urchins.
