🔍 Nickel Processing Explained: High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) The third part of our blog series on the nickel value chain takes a closer look at how nickel laterite ores are processed through High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) - a well-established technology that plays an important role in global nickel supply. Laterite ores are a significant source of the world's nickel, and HPAL is one of the key methods used to extract nickel and cobalt from these ores, particularly to produce mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP)—a sought-after intermediate product for the battery supply chain. In the last month NiPERA Inc. scientists have published a research article and a brief communication focusing on short-term (acute) nickel environmental quality standards. ❇️ The research article highlights the development and validation of an acute nickel bioavailability model (BLM) that follows the existing structure of the chronic nickel BLM currently recommended under the EU Water Framework Directive. 🟦 The brief communication exposes critical issues in the derivation process of the updated EU Nickel EQS values. By not considering bioavailability in the derivation of the acute Nickel EQS, there are instances where the 'safe' long-term nickel concentration is greater than the maximum allowable nickel concentration. This logical inconsistency will result in undue compliance exceedances, particularly in waters with low-bioavailability conditions that are expected to be insensitive to nickel ecotoxicity.
