We are the largest not-for-profit continuing care organization in Atlantic Canada.

About us

Northwood is Nova Scotia’s original senior citizen advocate, dating back to 1962. Since that time, we have led the way as Nova Scotia’s most dynamic continuing care organization committed to innovation and change. We are the largest not-for-profit continuing care organization in Atlantic Canada and are recognized both here at home and across Canada as an extraordinary example of the power of social justice, but we like to call it the power of love! When life changes, and society changes, Northwood leads the way, incorporating revolutionary designed, responsive care. From new ideas to new technologies, we are empowered to do this, because our focus is on people, not on profit margins. Northwood is a full spectrum health, lifestyle and continuing care organization with a staff of more than 1,700. We are continuously recognized as a great place to work, with the distinction of being one of Nova Scotia’s Top Employers as well as a Top Employer in Atlantic Canada. These special designations recognize employers who lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.

  • Join us in celebrating International Education Day and Northwood Career College Education is the foundation of peace, development, and a brighter future for all. At Northwood, we are proud to play a role in this global mission by empowering the next generation of caregivers through learning, compassion, and community. Our Northwood Career College (NCC) students are the embodiment of this vision. Under the guidance of Margaret Leveck, our dedicated CCA Clinical Instructor, these students are embarking on their 110-hour skills development placement at our Bedford Campus. Their journey is not just about learning—it’s about creating a world where care and connection lead the way. Education for peace and development starts here. As these future Continuing Care Assistants develop skills, they’re also fostering empathy, building meaningful relationships, and becoming advocates for dignity and respect. To our incredible NCC students: Your work goes beyond careers. It’s a mission to touch lives, a calling to be part of a story greater than your own, and a privilege to bring care and hope to others. This International Education Day, we recommit to the belief that education is a human right, a public good, and a powerful force for building inclusive, sustainable communities. Together, let’s build a future where care, excellence, and opportunity thrive for all. • This past holiday season, your generosity truly warmed our hearts and brought joy to seniors in our Northwood community. Thanks to your support of our Holiday Giving Campaigns, we were able to provide comfort, care, and cheer to those who needed it most. And to everyone who created beautiful, heartfelt cards your messages of love and kindness brightened the holidays for so many. Northwood doesn't work without the kindness and love shown by our community of supporters. We simply can't thank you enough.

  • Congratulations to our first Enhanced LPN Program graduates. In collaboration with the Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care, (SLTC), and under the leadership of Ann Mann, Northwood implemented its first Enhanced LPN Orientation program to eligible Internally Educated Nurses (IEN). To participate, IENs, were required to have a valid work permit, conditional RN or LPN license with the Nova Scotia Colleges of Nurses, and 5 years recent nursing experience. Northwood had four staff successfully complete the theory and clinical aspects of the orientation as of Friday, Jan 10, 2025. The orientation has received positive comments relating to how the program was held and how confident the candidates felt going into their clinical rotations. Congratulations to the four staff on the successful completion of your program. A special thank you to Ann Mann for leading the group toward this success. We look forward to the staff starting in their new LPN roles.
