Canada’s economy relies on rail to keep products and commodities moving, including the chemistry and plastics sector, which are used to make 96% of manufactured goods. The stoppage of rail is looming and will harm Canadian businesses and communities.
On a call with financial analysts last week CPKC President & CEO Keith Creel said a work stoppage was likely: "We're far apart. I'm just being transparent and honest. It's going to be a challenge. We've offered to enter into binding arbitration given we understand the potential damage to the Canadian economy." What would a shutdown of Canada's Class 1 railway system mean to manufacturers? -$275,000 in losses per day (both the anticipated decrease in revenues and the increase in expenses). -$551+ million in goods would not be moving on rail lines each day of a strike. -66% of respondents indicated that a strike would have dire consequences for their operations, reporting that the impact would be significant or severe. -77% of manufacturers believe that these labour strikes have negatively influenced foreign investors’ views of Canada. There is no MAY about it... Chemistry Industry Association of Canada shippers were under embargo as of 00:01 today - August 12. That means, as of now, no more pick ups (or deliveries) of key water treatment chemicals such as chlorine until the Teamsters Canada CN CPKC labour disruption (officially) starts on Aug 22, eventually ends, and when the system recovers. Time will tell whether Canadian Industrial Relations Board got their assessment on impacts to public safety right. One thing is for sure - the economic impact of the Board decision is already being felt with shut in facilities and their customers. In the interest of public safety and the economy, NOW is the time for Government of Canada and House of Commons of Canada Chambre des communes du Canada action, not after August 22.

In previous labour disruptions,and civic disruptions like the 2020 blockades, Chemistry Industry Association of Canada and public authorities executed extraordinary measures to protect drinking water supplies. With chlorine shipments shut in as we face both railways ceasing service, the issue of boil water advisories in our largest municipalities is looking increasingly likely. The time for the Government of Canada to act is now.
