Being hospitalized can be stressful for anyone. For people living with a cognitive impairment, being in a new environment with unfamiliar people – like an emergency department (ED) – can lead to escalated and unpredictable behaviour. Caring for these patients requires specialized knowledge, which is not always covered in standard university education for clinical staff. To fill this gap, Queensway Carleton Hospital created a Behaviour Support Registered Nurse (BSRN) role in the ED. The role facilitated quicker access to Geriatric Psychiatry services, ensuring patients received timely #dementiacare from admission onward. About us
Established in 1924, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) serves as the voice of the province’s public hospitals, supporting them through advocacy, knowledge translation and member engagement, labour relations, and data and analytics with the goal of helping hospitals build a better health system. The OHA is also attuned to the broader strategic questions facing the future of the province’s health care system and we work to ensure Ontario’s hospitals have a voice in shaping this longer-term vision.

For years, John Pritchard struggled with debilitating #arthritis in his left knee – a common ailment in seniors – which severely limited his mobility. Everything changed in March 2024, when Dr. Jose Guerra, an orthopaedic surgeon at Scarborough Health Network, performed a #totalkneereplacement surgery on John, using the new Velys surgical robot at Birchmount Hospital. Read more about how the surgery helped John get back to cycling 30 KM by 12 weeks post-op: https://lnkd.in/gr3hbsdt #surgicalcare #cuttingedgecare #kneesurgery #onhealth #HeretoCare

Long-term care homes in Ontario hit hardest by the pandemic are rebuilding with an enhanced focus on infection prevention and control thanks to new Infection and Prevention Control (IPAC) Hubs. The Hubs are local networks of #IPAC expertise established across the health system to enhance #infectioncontrol practices in community-based congregate living settings, such as long-term care homes. Sunnybrook was paired with 18 congregate care homes in north Toronto, known as the North Toronto IPAC Hub. "The Hub has become the new normal of how Sunnybrook integrates with its local community partners," says Dr. Jerome Leis, Medical Director of Infection, Prevention and Control at Sunnybrook and co-lead of the North Toronto IPAC Hub. "We have moved from the initial crisis to a longitudinal partnership where our focus is on prevention." Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gmsNnGtV #healthcarecollaboration #hospitalpartnerships #onhealth

Hospital visits can be an intimidating and lonely experience for older adults. Since its creation in 2010, the Maximizing Ageing Using Volunteer Engagement (MAUVE) program at Sinai Health has been assisting older patients during their hospital stays. Two MAUVE Coordinators and an Elder Life Specialist involved in the program share their thoughts on how it has evolved. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g8uNtFPV #onhealth #patientexperience

A new study, released today by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, finds that millions more Ontarians will be living with chronic illnesses in the next 20 years. The authors of the study, Projected Patterns of Illness in Ontario, published in collaboration with the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), project that 3.1 million adults will be living with major illness in Ontario in 2040, up from 1.8 million in 2020. Approximately one in four adults over the age of 30 will live with a major illness in 2040, requiring significant hospital care, up from approximately one in eight individuals in 2002. The findings have sobering implications for Ontario’s health care system, which will face significant strain and rapidly rising pressure in the next two decades. The province will face a level of demand for health services like never before. As we look to the future, it’s clear that Ontario has reached a turning point. Maintaining the status quo will not be an option. Read the full report: www.oha.com/health2040

When living with complex health conditions like dementia, frailty and mental health conditions, older adults frequently require the support of specially trained health and social care professionals. An annual inventory of these services, prepared by Provincial Geriatrics Leadership Ontario (PGLO), identified 1600+ expert health professionals who assess, treat and provide ongoing support. While not everyone requires specialized support, these services can make the difference between remaining in the community or being prematurely institutionalized. Specialized clinical services are also important supports to primary care providers as they care for increasing numbers of older adults. PGLO has estimated that more than 1.1 million older Ontarians may be living with frailty by 2040. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gEB5HQE2 #AgingwithDignity #SpecializedCare #ComplexCare #onhealth

Ontario hospitals welcome the independent Expert Panel for the Review of the Federal Approach to Pandemic Science Advice and Research Coordination chaired by Sir Mark Walport: “The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the critical importance of scientific research and advisory systems to support timely responses to an uncertain and evolving public health emergency…It is important to reflect on what has been learned, to improve readiness well in advance of the next pandemic or other public health emergency.” The Report underlines four major findings: • Canada must act now to be prepared for the next health emergency; • Greater coordination of research and science advice is required; • There must be a greater focus on addressing inequities in the structural and social determinants of health; and • Indigenous health expertise must be embedded in research advice and coordination.
