🇩🇪🚂 I had an incredible time at InnoTrans in Berlin last week, and I’m still blown away by the sheer scale of the event. The number of attendees and exhibitors was staggering—it truly is the place to be for anyone involved in the rail industry, both in Europe and beyond. I had the privilege of connecting with national rail owners and operators, consultancies, and innovative startups pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the sector. I’m looking forward to following up on the conversations I had and building stronger relationships with those I met. Here are a few of my insights from the event: 🚅 🚇 The Scale and Optimism Around New Rail Projects: One of the most exciting aspects of InnoTrans was the sheer scale of ongoing and upcoming rail projects worldwide. Whether in the heavy rail or light rail sectors, there is a sense of optimism as nations invest in new infrastructure and upgrades, driving innovation and sustainability in transportation. ❄️⛈️ Risk Management in the Face of Climate Change: There was a clear emphasis on the growing need for better risk management solutions, especially as the rail industry contends with the increasing impact of climate change. Rail owners and operators are actively seeking ways to protect infrastructure from evolving risks like flooding, landslides, and extreme weather. 🌍🛰️The Value of Space and GIS Tech: While still developing in this space, satellite and GIS technologies were underrepresented in discussions. However, the potential for tools like CATALYST’s InSAR data to offer deeper insights into rail corridor monitoring and asset management presents a valuable opportunity for the industry. 📊🧑🏻💻 Integrating Data for Better Decision-Making: A common theme was the challenge of bringing together disparate data sources. The rail sector recognises the need for seamless integration of data to help decision-makers quickly interpret complex information and make proactive decisions. 👷🏻👷🏻♀️ User-Friendly Tools for Ground Operations: There was also an emphasis on ensuring that the tools designed to display data are intuitive for those on the ground. The aim is to provide “boots on the ground” with easy-to-use platforms to facilitate informed, real-time decision-making in critical situations. These conclusions highlight the exciting growth in the rail industry and how CATALYST's data can play a crucial role in supporting these advancements. I'm already looking forward to InnoTrans 2026! 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮: In partnership with a leader in North America's regulated #gas and #electric utility industry, the CATALYST team were tasked with mapping the proximity of vegetation to the power transmission #network on Prince Edward Island - a province in #Canada susceptible to hurricanes, ice storms, and flooding. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚: Complete mapping of the island's network with proximity #analysis highlighting stretches most at risk of disruption or damage during major weather or climate events. From this work, the organization had access to information that - among a host of benefits - enabled data-driven decision making, improved network resilience, and reduced operation #costs through more strategic maintenance scheduling and disaster response. It was a great few days at #GeoMontreal for our INSIGHTS Processing Lead, Griffin Williams and Sales Representative, Daniel Purcell. Highlights included jared McGinn's presentation for the Government of New Brunswick / Gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick Transportation and Infrastructure, detailing their innovative resilience measurements across the province's road network and infrastructure assets. Pascal Szeftel of BGC Engineering Inc. provided fascinating insight into Transport Canada - Transports Canada's Rail Climate Change Adaptation Program (R-CCAP) in response to "Canada's rail networks and supply chains facing complex risks due to climate change". Sterling Mitchell, also from BGC Engineering, emphasized the growing challenges of climate change, such as landslides and floods, and the necessity for advanced geohazard management strategies integrating technology to handle vast data streams effectively. And it was inspiring to hear Rob Kenyon discuss how the KGS supports the technical excellence of Canadian geotechnical professionals in managing geohazards. Overall, the event underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in tackling climate-related challenges head-on. We’re excited to take these insights forward and continue contributing to solutions that safeguard our infrastructure and communities. #GeoMontreal #Infrastructure #ClimateChange #GeohazardManagement #TransportationInfrastructure June McAlarey, CPA, CMA, MBA Kevin R Jones, EMBA
