This month's #EcoEnterprise edition is on certifications: our year-long initiative to certify our products thoughtfully, what we learned, what certifications we chose (and why), and our key learnings from the process. We're excited and proud to announce that we've certified our products against 4 major certification schemes! We were (and continue to remain) somewhat skeptical about the role that certifications play in moving the packaging industry forward, and circularity in particular. Specifically, we worry when brands equate sustainability goals with certifications, rather than setting them around evolving concepts and sciences like circularity, carbon, and resource consumption (and then using certs as one tool to help audit and verify against these goals). However, certifications aren't going anywhere, and although they're not perfect, when used thoughtfully they can support sustainability teams and supply chain verification. We've learned, evolved, and wanted to share our learnings, as well as some tools like: 🌳 Our searchable Library of Sustainability Certifications 🌳 How to Verify Supplier Certification Claims, and 🌳 Clear evaluation criteria for when EcoEnclose will pursue certifications. Today is the United Nations International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Estimates suggest that 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are associated with food that is not consumed. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the average American family of four throws away roughly $1,500 worth of food every year. Household food waste might include uneaten leftovers, expired pantry essentials, or produce gone bad.
