Wondering how to get your #tax strategy in shape before the year ends? In today’s edition of Peak Money, our bi-weekly #personalfinance newsletter, Jamie Golombek, Managing Director of Tax & Estate Planning at CIBC, shares three key tax strategies you can implement before the calendar flips: 1. Tax-gain selling As of June 25, 2024, the capital gain inclusion rate was increased to 66.67% for gains over $250,000 annually. You may therefore wish to crystalize up to $250,000 of capital gains before year-end, to take advantage of the lower 50% inclusion rate. Crystallization for publicly traded shares is as easy as selling the position on the open market and immediately buying it back. 2. Tax-loss selling Tax-loss selling involves selling investments in non-registered accounts with accrued losses at year-end to offset capital gains realized elsewhere in your portfolio. Any net capital losses that cannot be used currently may either be carried back three years or carried forward indefinitely to offset net capital gains in other years. 3. Open a first home savings account (FHSA) Finally, if you’re a first-time home buyer (no home in the current year or previous four calendar years), consider opening up an FHSA, which allows you to save on a tax-free basis towards the purchase of a home. You can contribute $8,000 per year to an FHSA, plus any carryforward available from the previous year (up to another $8,000), and up to $40,000 during your lifetime. This answer has been cut down for length. Read the full answer here: https://lnkd.in/eNYmWagh.
