Creating human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots
About us
Sanctuary is on a mission to create the world’s first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots that will help us work more safely, efficiently, and sustainably. And in the not-too-distant future, help us explore, settle, and prosper in outer space. Members of the Sanctuary team founded D-Wave (a pioneer in the quantum computing industry), Kindred (first use of reinforcement learning in a production robot), and the Creative Destruction Lab (pioneered a revolutionary method for the commercialization of science for the betterment of humankind). The team has experience launching market-defining innovations rooted in previously unsolved and deep scientific problems.

Today is my 3-Year Anniversary! That’s right folks, another year in, another bumper year of progress, achievements, and exciting developments here at Sanctuary AI. This time last year, I posted about the company mission, the various activities that had kept my team busy, and the outcomes those activities had accomplished. This year, I wanted to do something a little different as times have changed and the industry has moved on somewhat.

Canada is at a pivotal moment in its manufacturing history, especially in food and beverage processing. There’s a projected need for 142,000 new workers by 2030 and an understaffing rate of about 25%, causing the sector to lose potential revenue. As traditional labor sources dwindle—exacerbated by a birth rate which is below replacement level— the urgency for innovative solutions grows. According to a study by Food Processing Technologies Skills Canada (FPSC) job vacancies could cost the food processing industry up to $9.3 million daily, totaling $3.4 billion annually. In a recent article with Food in Canada magazine, our CMO Benedict Reed explained why current automation tools aren't enough to bridge this gap. He stated that “All of the present automation in manufacturing is designed for one or a couple of specific things, the challenge is that there are still things that require people to create the final product, and such roles can’t be automated with traditional technologies.” We see our Phoenix humanoid robots as a solution. Designed to mimic the adaptability of a person, Phoenix features dexterous hands and an AI-powered control system called Carbon, allowing it to learn a variety of tasks and seamlessly integrate into existing workflows. A recent analysis from Tech+IP Advisory identified Sanctuary AI as a leader in the patents for humanoid robotics. The article focused on two key technology groups: general purpose robots and dexterous manipulation technologies. It states that “Sanctuary AI…holds a position in these two sectors that is one of the most important globally and that positions it extremely well for a $100 billion-plus global market in the 2030s.” Sanctuary AI currently ranks 4th amongst the top 15 companies globally in both general purpose robotics technology and dexterous manipulation technology patent holdings. " The article also noted that “among recognized startups and emerging growth companies in humanoid robotics, only Sanctuary AI and Brain Corp make the list”. Since inception, we've invested in R&D and patents, securing our place in the future global humanoid robotics market. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/efpcJdfB #IntellectualProperty #Innovation #AI

The global labour shortage is real—and it’s only getting worse. As we see an aging population and declining birth rates, the future of work is under pressure. In Canada, we're already feeling the impact. Our healthcare system is short tens of thousands of nurses, our armed forces are lacking 16,500 members, and over 80% of manufacturers report understaffing. The question is: How do we bridge this gap? James Wells believes that AI general-purpose robots are not just a concept for the distant future—they're the solution to today’s growing workforce crisis. These robots can do the jobs that are currently going unfilled, operating with efficiency, reliability, and adaptability across a range of sectors from manufacturing to healthcare.
