This past week I had the incredible privilege of spending time at Hollyhock on Cortes Island, BC with 60 social innovation lab practitioners/experts to reflect on the last 10 years of lab practice and set the stage for the next 10. While we grappled with the definition of labs, the "why" remained constant: Labs are a container for participants to enact, embody, and experiment with possible futures. Whether trying to change a team, department, company, community, or society, the value is in practicing the new. While tangible outputs like ideas, prototypes, and findings from labs have great value, the intangible has always carried the truly transformational potential: new relationships, practices, ways of seeing, and ways of being. In other words, labs have often been focused on the more masculine traits of doing and external change. The future of labs is relational: integrating feminine traits of *being* and internal transformation. This was beautifully modelled at the Future of Labs gathering. Thank you to the organizers for bringing me into the fold and to all the other participants for the much-needed energy. Last year we wrapped up a 12-month Social R&D project called Disruptive Stability, where we sought to explore the following two questions: ❓ What are the ripple effects of substance use and housing stabilisation on perceptions of purpose and social connections? ❓ What opportunities and leverage points exist within the local community to promote economic and social inclusion of people with lived experience of substance use and of being unhoused/precariously housed who are transitioning into more stable states? Over 55 people with lived and living experience of criminalised drug use contributed to the co-designed two interventions: a flexible employment framework and a power-sharing organisational structure to support the further development of harm reductionist housing and the creation of opportunities to address social and material needs.
