  • Another beautiful ceiling tile has been sold! 🎨 The piece titled ‘Whiskered Companions’ 🐱 was painted by Felicia Ceban, Irina Petrovic, and Parnia Sadeghzadeh as a part of The Mac Med Mural Project, an effort to promote wellness through art in healthcare settings. Inspired by French artist Agathe Singer's cats, the three cats represent the three artists and their unique personalities. The artists hope these vibrant cats will brighten the moods of passersby and remind them of the importance of companionship in tough times. Karin Dearness, a Librarian at the Charlton Campus Library purchased ‘Whiskered Companions’ on behalf of the Library Services team. 📚 Karin shared “I love the idea that the art created in the program not only helps to provide a creative outlet for medical students but then has the benefit of being accessible to patients and visitors.” Karin felt drawn to this ceiling tile since cats and libraries have a long history together. She felt the design might remind viewers of a cat they know, diverting their attention away from the hospital for a moment as they recall a joyful place or memory of a furry friend. 💙 The Mac Med Mural Project is led by a group of medical students at McMaster University using art to promote wellness in healthcare settings. They aim to adorn St. Joe's with decorated ceiling tiles to promote wellness, relieve anxiety and create a comforting environment. Ceiling tiles were chosen as the unconventional canvas to bring smiles to the faces of patients, family members, volunteers, physicians and visitors at St. Joe’s. Tiles can be sponsored in honour or in memory of a loved one, or simply as a way to give back to St. Joe’s. Donors can select from more than 20 pre-painted ceiling tiles. • Mid November we celebrated the 2023 Mission Legacy Award ceremony at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. The Mission Legacy Award recognizes key individuals and departments / teams who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to the legacy and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, St. Joseph's Health System, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and its Foundation. Each month we feature one of the award recipients to share a bit more about how they have made meaningful contributions throughout their time with our health care organization. This month we feature the Forensic Psychiatry Program Managers. Taralynn Filipovic, Derek Stokke, Sarah Fuller, Bradley Labuguen, and Bruce Peachey are an amazing team of managers in the Forensic Psychiatry Program. • We’re congratulating Dr. Sabrina Syan, a clinical psychologist at St. Joe’s, for receiving the 2023 Ruth Berman Award by the Ontario Psychological Association for her outstanding contributions to the field of psychology early in her career. Dr. Syan was recognized for her unique educational background, blending her cognitive neuroscience research skills within her clinical practice to enhance patient care. Additionally, she received praise for her dedication to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in her work. She credits her professional achievements to the exceptional training and mentorship programs she received from St. Joe’s and McMaster University as a former student. “McMaster’s Research and Clinical Training Program created a partnership between two incredibly strong educational institutions: McMaster and St. Joe's. This has harnessed their ability to provide students and learners with the opportunity to engage in the highest levels of education, research, and clinical care that a tertiary care, academic medical centre can provide,” Dr. Syan says. • St. Joseph’s Health System together with St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and its charitable Foundation join the Weisz Family, the Effort Trust organization, and the wider Hamilton community in mourning the loss of Thomas J. (Tom) Weisz. A pillar of our community, Tom had a profound respect for the healing mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton. He brought his strong business acumen, legal expertise and infinite wisdom to our organization through the years he spent serving as a member of the Board of Governors of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton from 1991 - 1999. Tom and Sasha are long-time, generous donors to our Hospital, supporting various programs and capital building projects, while also attending and sponsoring countless events in support of St. Joe’s. Tom was perhaps best known as a real estate mogul and the founder of Effort Trust, but he also possessed a visionary understanding of how philanthropy and industry partnerships could help to mend the gaps and ease the pressures faced by our healthcare system. We are grateful to have had the chance to know, to learn from, and to be a beneficiary of Tom’s generosity, kindness and leadership. On behalf of all of us at St. Joe’s, we offer our deepest sympathies to the Weisz family. May Tom’s memory be a blessing and a comfort during this difficult time. In light of this news and in remembrance of Tom the flags at our campuses have been lowered to half-mast.

  • Things are “looking up” at St. Joe’s! The first few pieces of ceiling tile art have now been installed at various locations throughout the Charlton Campus of our Hospital for patients, visitors, volunteers, physicians and staff to enjoy. The beautiful designs painted by residency students from McMaster University include messages of hope, resilience, and strength. While it may seem like an unconventional canvas, ceiling tiles were chosen for their unique ability to bring comfort and maybe even a smile to the faces of patients and family members as they lay in their hospital beds or await a scan or test. The Mac Med Mural Project at St. Joe’s is designed to bring the healing power of art to the clinical environment. Ceiling tiles are on sale via the hospital gift shop’s online store. With your $125.00 tile sponsorship, 100 percent of proceeds will be donated back to the Mac Med Mural Project and the Department of Education at St. Joe’s. You can choose to purchase a tile just because, or dedicate it in honour or in memory of a friend, colleague or loved one. Choose from more than 20 pre-painted ceiling tiles, including the ones featured here.
