Ontario’s last tourism strategy was developed by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism in 2016 through collaboration with industry stakeholders. Now, TIAO is proud to be leading the development of a new industry led Ontario tourism strategy, and they need industry input. This strategy will guide growth for the tourism sector, ensuring it is industry-led and market-driven. Business voices are crucial to ensuring that Ontario’s tourism industry not only recovers but thrives in the global market. This week, Minto Schneider, CDME, 💡Jeff Nearing and Krista Marie LeClair, MBA are representing Meetings Mean Business Canada and the country's business events sector in Ottawa as part of the annual Parliament HILL DAYS event. Led by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, and taking place October 7 to 9, HILL DAYS is an important opportunity to meet in-person with Senators, Members of Parliament and other federal decision makers. MMBC leaders will discuss issues that impact our sector, as well as the success of the International Convention Attraction Fund (ICAF). The program was created in 2023 with a three-year funding commitment. Preliminary data shows: • 21 business events funded to-date • $7.4M invested • $122.2M direct economic impact • $8.5M direct federal tax • 51,786 overnight delegates • 1,039 full-time equivalent positions OUR ASK: We’re asking the federal government to extend funding for the program for an additional two years to help Canada regain its ranking among the top international business events destinations. Today we celebrate World Tourism Day and the positive impact all tourism sectors have on our community each year. From hotels to restaurants, attractions to events, we celebrate those who have dedicated their careers to welcoming visitors to Kingston. The sector locally is driven by a range of tourism experiences from visiting friends and family to motor coach tours, business meetings and sport events to film and music production – and tourism in Kingston happens year-round. Tourism is a key driver of Kingston’s economy. Kingston has one of the largest hospitality and accommodation workforces in Canada providing almost 9% of Kingston’s workforce or 15,000 tourism-related jobs. The RTO 9 region overall is home to 7,000 tourism businesses. 2023 by the numbers: $544 million economic impact 1.9 million visitors 628,300 room nights 51% overnight visitors 49% day visitors
