Unpacking Innovation: A Cutting-Edge Wood Structure // Part 2: Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum isn’t just a showcase of prehistoric fossils—it’s a feat of engineering itself. Designed in close collaboration between architects, structural engineers, and fabricators, the museum’s heavy-timber skeleton pushes the boundaries of wood construction. Crafted from pine beetle wood and connected by CNC-milled Douglas fir nodes, this structure takes inspiration from nature, resembling a primordial skeleton. The nodes, key structural intersections, posed a major challenge due to their complex geometry. Instead of carving from massive timber blocks—an expensive and impractical approach—the solution was to laminate stacked plywood layers, akin to 3D printing. Each node was precisely modeled in 3D software to integrate internal steel reinforcements before being fabricated in a workshop. Full-scale tests ensured strength, with massive 19mm diameter, 1200mm long screws reinforcing the structure like rebar in concrete. Advanced tools like Rhino 3D and Grasshopper optimized material use and ensured exact placement of screws and dowels, achieving both efficiency and precision. Some nodes reached an impressive 1.5m tall and 2.4m wide, assembled from 180+ CNC-cut plywood layers. This innovative approach to timber construction showcases the power of digital fabrication, blending sustainable materials with cutting-edge technology to bring this incredible museum to life. 📸 Tom Arban
