The Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI), named for Canadian icon Terry Fox, is built on Terry's dream to end cancer through research. Established in 2007, TFRI invests in world-class, collaborative cancer research teams and partnerships. Together with its research and funding partners, TFRI is working to inspire the transformation of cancer research in this country by bringing together leading cancer research and treatment organizations in Canada and empowering them under the framework of the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network and the Digital Health and Discovery Platform. TFRI collaborates with the Terry Fox Foundation and Terry Fox Centre as a member of a trio of Terry Fox organizations created in memory of the Canadian hero and champion of cancer research.

Imagine what would be possible by bringing together emerging and prominent research leaders from the UK and Canada to discuss cancer prevention. That’s exactly what we’ve been engaged in over the last few days thanks to Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in collaboration with the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research, Cancer Research Society, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and The Terry Fox Research Institute. The Canadian Cancer Society recently collaborated to organize the Bringing Biology to Cancer Prevention workshop in London. This workshop brought together a small group of diverse researchers from the UK and Canada to exchange knowledge and address the challenge of cancer prevention. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate, exchange knowledge and address the challenge of cancer prevention. Nothing big gets solved by one person or one organization. It takes a society. 💛

🧬 Tackling post-transplant relapse in acute myeloid leukemia 🧬 We're thrilled to announce that Dr. Igor Novitzky-Basso, hematologist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, is one of the recipients of the 2024 Clinician-Scientist Awards from the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network! Dr. Novitzky-Basso will use funding from this award to advance research that will help predict and prevent relapse in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients who undergo stem cell transplants. His project focuses on understanding the genetic mutations and immune evasion mechanisms that drive relapse, using cutting-edge genomic technologies. “Despite the potential of stem cell transplants, some AML patients still experience relapse. By identifying new biomarkers and therapeutic targets, we hope to prevent relapse and improve patient outcomes,” says Dr. Novitzky-Basso. This important work could lead to personalized treatment strategies, offering AML patients a better chance at long-term remission. 🧬 🍁 Targeting inflammation to prevent, detect and treat liver cancers 🍁 🧬 Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common and deadly form of liver cancer. It often arises in those with chronic liver disease caused by viral infections, fatty liver disease, or alcohol use. In recent years, researchers have found that early detection can improve outcomes for patients with HCC, but predicting which patients with liver disease will develop HCC—or whose cancer will return after treatment—remains a challenge. Dr. Robert Vanner, a medical oncologist and researcher at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, is stepping up to meet this challenge. With support from a Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network Clinician-Scientist Award, he will expand his research into on a recently discovered factor that is linked to both inflammation and cancer formation in the liver, and that could be targeted to better detect, prevent and treat liver cancers. 🔬 🍁 Improving risk assessment strategies to personalize care for patients with prostate cancer 🍁🔬 Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death among Canadian men. However, not all cases are life-threatening. For those with low-risk prostate cancer, active surveillance is the standard of care, helping men avoid the side effects of surgery or radiation. The challenge, however, lies in accurately identifying which patients can safely go on active surveillance without risking the progression of a potentially lethal tumour. This is where Dr. Adam Kinnaird, a surgeon-scientist at the University of Alberta comes in. Thanks to new funding from a Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network’s Clinician-Scientist Award he will lead a project seeking to develop a sophisticated risk calculator that combines advanced imaging, biopsy techniques, and genetic data to better predict the likelihood of prostate cancer progression. "As a Urologist, I see, diagnose, and treat men with prostate cancer every day. Many men on active surveillance are worried about their risk of progression and fear that delaying treatment may affect their life expectancy," explains Dr. Kinnaird. "Conversely, some men are desperate to avoid further diagnostic interventions like prostate biopsy. This project will provide evidence to help men and their clinicians make decisions about how often a repeat biopsy is needed without increasing the risk of missing an aggressive cancer." --- This tool could be a game-changer, helping clinicians and patients make informed decisions about treatment and monitoring, ultimately improving outcomes and quality of life through personalized, precision medicine.
