It's your first day in your new role as Chief Surveyor. The phone rings, someone from the commercial team needs help preparing a bid on a full spread geophysical survey. Multibeam, sidescan, sub-bottom and magnetometer, not to mention USBL, etc, etc. They need an answer by the end of the day. Where do you start? How do you figure out which sensor is limiting your vessel speed? How to know your maximum altitude for magnetometer to ensure target detection? What line spacing and vessel speed allows you to meet accuracy and resolution needs for each sensor? What techniques do you use to manage acoustic interference? How do you tame this Acoustic Mayhem? As Summer comes to an end and I settle back into a busy academic schedule, I wanted to share some favourite memories of my professional life from the past several months It began with a trip to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, where I attended the Canadian Hydrographic Conference as part of a cohort of fellow BCIT students Lee Ratke and Jela Pena, led by Sean Galway. For this I would like to especially say thank you Sean, COMREN, and The Canadian Hydrographic Association for the opportunity. The experience enabled me to gain a much broader insight into the field of geomatics, as well as meet some new people along the way! For the following weeks, I was able to gain valuable experience working at Binnie alongside their field surveyors as a survey assistant. During this time, I built my technical knowledge, as well as developed intuition, confidence, and problem solving approaches as it relates to land surveying. If you pay close attention to the pictures, you may notice I lost a little weight from considerable bushwork and pin-pounding, haha. Acoustic Mayhem Workshop October 28-November 01, 2024 University of Delaware, Lewes, Delaware Nowadays, multi-sensor hydrographic and geophysical surveys are very common. Getting these systems to work together in harmony takes the skills of an orchestral conductor. This course helps you to remove risk by getting expert advice on how to plan your surveys and how to configure your software and sensors. The workshop style teaching encourages sharing best practices for acquiring & processing data from the different sensors.
