The District of Saanich council has unanimously passed a resolution urging the provincial government to address the root causes of feral rabbits province-wide. In addition to addressing the welfare of these rabbits, non-lethal solutions are needed. There is a lack of regulations around breeding and the widespread selling of unsterilized rabbits, a lack of education for pet owners, and a clear need for provincial action. We support this resolution as it calls on the province to address the issue at its core. Backed by local organizations, the resolution will now be debated at the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities. Learn more: https://buff.ly/4aPszZT

The BC Conservation Officer Service (BC COS) reported a 49.7% drop in black bear killings in 2024, with 303 bears killed compared to 603 in 2023. We’re pleased to see the BC COS working with communities to reduce service calls and the need for interventions, and congratulate them on this positive step forward, though much work remains to be done. The Fur-Bearers will continue to monitor this data and hold government agencies who kill wildlife like the BC COS accountable for their actions. Learn more: https://buff.ly/40KWBeg

Nearly 60 years ago, George and Bunty Clements first illuminated lights on a tree for every donation The Fur-Bearers received through December. While there is no longer a tree to light up, the spirit of this tradition lives on. As we approach the holidays, we’re grateful for your continued support. From all of us at The Fur-Bearers, thank you! Learn all about the history of our Christmas Tree for the Animals tradition and how we’re celebrating today: https://buff.ly/3DAuoNN
