Recycled Crushed Aggregate (#RCA) is exactly what it sounds like: #concrete and #asphalt that is processed and reused. Instead of ending up in a landfill, this sustainable, cost-effective, and high-performing material can be used in the construction and maintenance of roads, subdivisions, highways, bridges, and tunnels to help lower overall carbon emissions and project costs. Together with our industry coalition partners, we're launching a new campaign to urge municipalities to adopt policy changes to increase the use of RCA in the construction of public #infrastructure projects. With the 2025 Good Roads Annual Conference in town, we're highlighting this great quote from Executive Director Scott Butler: "The time has come to embrace the use of recycled content in the construction and rehabilitation of our road networks. Doing so will abate the need for unnecessary resource extraction without compromising performance." The quality of #RecycledCrushedAggregates has been proven. The time has come to embrace it. We're finally hearing real commitments from Premiers to breaking down interprovincial barriers, but we can make even faster progress here in #Ontario by standardizing specification and procurement practices at the municipal level. Making the case in Canada's National Observer with my colleague Patrick McManus at Greater Toronto Sewer and Watermain Contractors Association (GTSWCA) on building the infrastructure we desperately need better and more cost-effectively in these uncertain and unpredictable times. https://lnkd.in/gnmv6Pzf

The Engtec Consulting team recently completed an important study for the Toronto and Area Road Builders Association (TARBA), addressing a key industry concern: the structural performance of Crushed Concrete. 🔎 What We Found: Our research evaluated the Structural Number (SN) and Granular Base Equivalency (GBE), providing clarity on material selection and specifications and long-standing inconsistencies. The data demonstrates that crushed concrete offers comparable structural performance to traditional granular materials—without necessitating increased thickness. ✅ Impacts and Benefits: Proving crushed concrete’s structural reliability allows the industry to: ✔️ Promote and advance sustainable construction practices ✔️ Reduce dependency on virgin aggregate materials ✔️ Simplify standards to encourage broader adoption Our findings are reinforced by comprehensive Resilient Modulus testing using our advanced Servo-hydraulic Universal Testing Machines (UTM 30 kN), delivering the technical validation necessary for confidently integrating crushed concrete into future infrastructure projects. 👉 Want to learn more? "Increasing the use of RCA is a great and tangible way for the construction industry to improve sustainability and help the environment. RCCAO is proud to partner on this important campaign highlighting RCA's environmental and economic benefits. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation/ Ministère des Transports de l’Ontario's leadership in adopting recycled crushed aggregates demonstrates their commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship, and we urge municipalities across Ontario to follow their example. Together, we can build durable, high-performing infrastructure that supports our communities and the environment." –Nadia Todorova, Executive Director, Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO) #RCA #RecycledCrushedAggregate #Municipalities #MunicipalInfrastructure #OntarioInfrastructure #BuildOntario #OntarioMunicipalities #Sustainaility

On April 2, Skilled Trades Ontario will be your first point of contact for apprenticeship services. This is a significant milestone—one made possible through the dedication and collaboration of government partners, industry leaders, and the skilled trades community. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to this process and remain committed to making this shift as seamless as possible. “These changes are happening because we heard you—apprentices, employers, and training providers have shared the importance of a system that is easy to navigate, accessible, and responsive,” CEO Candice White says in the latest STO Connected. “Our goal is to make this shift as seamless as possible so you can focus on what matters most: building and supporting rewarding careers in the skilled trades.” We are making these changes to: * Make the system easier to navigate – With STO as your first point of contact, services will be centralized, making processes clearer and more streamlined. * Improve access to certifying exams – Offsite exam locations will ensure apprentices across Ontario have the support they need to complete their certifications. * Ensure a seamless implementation – STO is working closely with our government and industry partners to ensure this change is smooth and efficient. We’ll continue sharing updates as we move toward April 2, 2025. Please check our website for the latest details. Questions? Email us at info@skilledtradesontario.ca.

Premier Doug Ford swore in his new cabinet today. Fresh off a third consecutive majority PC re-election win, the Premier’s renewed team will be tasked with executing campaign promises and realizing the vision to build Ontario. RCCAO was honoured to be on hand to witness this historic occasion, and will continue to work constructively with the Ontario Government to advance critical #infrastructure and #housing to build a more resilient economy across the province. 🏡 Rob Flack becomes Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Ontario is in a housing crisis. Streamlining building regulations, expanding e-permitting, and remaining committed to building code harmonization by reining in the fragmented web of municipal requirements across Ontario must be a priority. 🛣️ Minister of Transport Prabmeet Sarkaria’s focus on critical #transportation #infrastructure has been commendable. Highway 413, the Bradford Bypass, & Ontario Line will be great for Ontario. Improving tendering timelines on other critical work needs to be prioritized to realize our potential. 📋 Stephen Crawford becomes Minister of MPBSD. With recent legislated changes to Ontario One Call, it's time to make operational improvements: -Eliminate need for relocates on deep excavation projects -Enforcing delivery standards must be prioritized to reduce construction delays & costs. 🏦 Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy will continue in the role. Sustained investment in critical infrastructure to enable more housing and expanding our transportation and transit networks will be essential to enhance our competitiveness and make our economy more resilient. 🚰 Kinga Surma, MPP becomes Minister of Infrastructure. As the province expands critical infrastructure across Ontario, sustained follow through on housing enabling funding and continuing to meaningfully address the infrastructure deficit caused by years of under-investment will be key. 👷♂️ David Piccini remains as Minister of Labour. He's worked diligently to ensure Ontario has the workforce to support its infrastructure needs. RCCAO will continue our productive collaboration, particularly through ongoing streamlining of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program. 🍃 Todd McCarthy becomes Minister at MECP. Continuing with modernizing the environmental assessment process, the management of excess soils and highlighting the importance of using recycled crushed aggregate in projects are all key to building Ontario’s infrastructure and housing.

♻️ Earlier today, on Global Recycling Day, RCCAO member, the Toronto and Area Road Builders Association (TARBA) held a valuable and informative webinar on the economic and environmental benefits of using Recycled Crushed Aggregate! Raly Chakarova, TARBA Executive Director, provided a comprehensive overview of the many applications of RCA in #transportation and #building projects in the region and province. The webinar also focused on how York Region (The Regional Municipality of York) used more than 200,000 tonnes in its #construction of the VivaNext #transit line on Yonge Street. #RCA #GlobalRecyclingDay Ehsan Khosravi Fard M.Eng,P.Eng,PMP Jason Mainprize Domenic Passalacqua
