Canada's particle accelerator centre

About us

Established in 1968 in Vancouver, TRIUMF is Canada’s particle accelerator centre. The lab is a hub for discovery and innovation inspired by a half-century of ingenuity in answering some of nature's most challenging questions. From the hunt for the smallest particles in the universe to the development of new technologies, TRIUMF is pushing frontiers in research, while training the next generation of leaders in science, medicine, and business. Powered by its complement of top talent and advanced accelerator infrastructure, TRIUMF is pushing the frontiers in isotope science and innovation, as well as technologies to address fundamental and applied problems in particle and nuclear physics, and the materials and life sciences. In collaboration with Canadian universities from coast to coast, TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Our passion for understanding everything from the nature of the nucleus to the creation of the cosmos sparks imagination, inspiration, improved health, economic opportunity, and a better world for all. From its diversity, cutting-edge research, and world-class facilities, to its competitive benefits package and stunning location, TRIUMF is a great place to work.

Calling all physics fans in Whistler, BC: Join us for a special lecture from TRIUMF's Dr. Cornelia Hoehr, 'How Nuclear Physics Can Treat Cancer', on Sunday, August 18th! Besides being Canada's particle accelerator centre with emphasis on nuclear, particle and accelerator physics, TRIUMF has a long history of medical isotope production and radiotherapy. Cancer treatment with different particles has been a long-standing commitment at TRIUMF, first with pion therapy and then with proton therapy, for many years operating Canada's only proton therapy facility. To improve treatment further, we are researching and establishing FLASH radiotherapy, where the total treatment dose is delivered in less than a second. In addition, we are investigating using alpha and auger emitters for targeted radioisotope therapy. Both have the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment by increasing the therapeutic index. TRIUMF Science Week 2024 is off to a tremendous start! Today, we kicked off an exciting week with an overview of the laboratory's science program and key highlights, a welcome reception for friends and colleagues, and a special guest lecture from TRIUMF Researcher Emeritus and Royal Society of Canada Fellow, Dr. Tom Ruth, who joined us to explore the role that TRIUMF and Canada have played in the development of the life-saving positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. A special thank-you to our TRIUMF Science Week sponsors, isoSolutions , iseg - High Voltage. Exactly., and Kontron.

Get your free tickets to a public lecture on July 22nd at TRIUMF with Tom Ruth: From Vision to Seeing: Tracing the brief history of positron emission tomography in BC and Canada. Abstract: The 1975/76 period saw the perfect convergence of experts in the fields of radiochemistry, basic neuroscience and clinical medical imaging to create the first in vivo (living person) functional images of the human brain using positron emission tomography, PET. This development spurred the US National Institutes of Health to fund 10 US centers to develop human imaging studies in 1980. Recognizing the unique possibilities at TRIUMF and the Neuroscience Programs at UBC, Pat McGeer (an international recognized neuroscientist on leave to serve as a member of the legislature in Victoria) and researchers at TRIUMF (Brain Pate) and Chemistry (Laurie Hall) formed the core to bring this new concept of imaging with PET to British Columbia. Over the next 20+ years the UBC/TRIUMF Program produced some ground breaking findings in the understanding of Parkinsons disease. In the mid 1990s, it became apparent that this technique could be used to help diagnosis cancer and follow the efficacy of treatment. With the help of TRIUMF scientist, the BC Cancer Agency embarked on the development of a clinical program. Integrating the clinical program with a research program through the BC Cancer Research Centre they pursued basic research into the basic mechanism of cancer and to investigate treatments. While other centres in Canada pursued PET, this talk will focus on the TRIUMF contributions of the past, present and a glimpse into the future. Science Week reception open to the public at 5:30 and the lecture will start at 6pm in the auditiorium. Free tickets and more info: https://lnkd.in/ggZK6rqe
