About us
Canada’s literacy divide widens daily because so many people lack adequate literacy support. Bridging the literacy gap is something we can do. Solving systemic literacy challenges is key to advancing social equity and prosperity across our country. Literacy changes everything. United for Literacy is a national literacy charity that was founded in 1899. We believe literacy is a right, and that every place can be a learning place. Our vision is a Canada in which everyone has the literacy skills they need to achieve their goals at school, at work, and in life. Our mission is to provide local literacy support programs that change lives.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫 United for Literacy would like to extend this tribute to the Honorable Murray Sinclair for everything he did to advance the rights of Indigenous peoples and Reconciliation. We honour the life and legacy of Murray Sinclair, the Anishinaabe senator and champion of justice, reconciliation, and Indigenous rights in Canada. As a trailblazer and former Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Senator Sinclair dedicated his life to addressing the impact of residential schools and advocating for a future rooted in understanding and respect. Senator Sinclair, a member of the Peguis First Nation, was a mentor, a storyteller, and a guide who inspired people to advocate for their communities and strive for social justice. In 2012, Justice Sinclair participated in United for Literacy’s (formerly Frontier College) National Forum on Literacy and Justice. At the time, he spoke plainly about the connection between the ability to read and youth involvement in the justice system. He spoke with candour about the lasting negative effects of residential schools on Indigenous peoples in Canada. He also spoke of the importance of getting books to families in Indigenous communities, many of which don’t have libraries. This way, children will grow up in an environment that encourages reading. Murray Sinclair’s legacy is profound. His vision for a just and inclusive Canada guides our work and inspires us to move forward with a spirit of respect, collaboration, and equity for all. At United for Literacy, we are thankful to have had the opportunity to learn from him. He will be missed.
