During this Invisible Disabilities Week, we want to challenge people leaders to shift the culture in your organizations! There are many reasons why your team members may not disclose their invisible disabilities. In fact, 80% of disabilities are hidden at work. Their reasons can include stigma, their sense of self-reliance, and possibly you! As a manager, you should expect that people with non-apparent disabilities are already on your team. You won’t always know if your employees have an invisible disability. That’s why it’s so important to be proactive in fostering an inclusive environment that will be accessible to all. Ready to take on the challenge? Book an Accessibility for People Leaders training with us! We’re happy to customize the length and format of the training session to fit your organization’s budget and capacity. Accessibility Beyond Compliance
About us
Untapped Accessibility helps organizations reach beyond accessibility requirements to create truly inclusive organizations. A social enterprise created by Open Door Group, the agency was launched in Fall 2022 to support organizations regulated by the Accessible BC Act and federally regulated employers seeking to comply with the Accessible Canada Act as they develop their accessibility plans, committees and public feedback mechanisms to reach beyond compliance. We believe that accessibility is the path forward to a more inclusive future, and we contribute to that future by supporting organizations to become more disability inclusive, by employing professionals with disabilities ourselves, and by generating funds for our nonprofit ownership’s mission to open doors to lifelong learning and career success for people of all abilities.

Did you know that there are over 440,000 people in Canada who have a speech, language, or communication disability that is not the result of significant hearing loss? As today is International Stuttering Awareness Day, let’s collectively take a moment to explore ways organizations can improve access for employees with speech, language, and communication disabilities. Accommodations such as these are often inexpensive (and support inclusion for all employees): - Using patience when communicating - Asking someone to repeat what they’ve said or inviting them to spell out the word(s) that are difficult to enunciate - Normalizing the use of chat features to contribute to a discussion on video calls - Providing the option to communicate via email or text For more ideas on how to support employees with speech, language, and communication disabilities, read our blog by Accessibility Consultant Ekamjit Ghuman. https://lnkd.in/g_QC3KRB #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityEmployment #Inclusion

Where do you go when your beloved pet needs care? To a vet, most likely. Veterinary practices are important places of caring in our community, but they may not have been developed with accessibility in mind — until now. With new accessibility legislation and updates to the building code, the veterinary field is now stepping up to improve inclusion. Untapped Accessibility was pleased to have contributed to the West Coast Veterinarian Magazine’s fall issue to shine a light on addressing accessibility for staff and clients in a vet environment. To tap into the power of diverse lived experiences, veterinary practice owners can engage with both clients and staff to explore social and emotional aspects of accessibility, such as: - Attitudinal barriers - Policy barriers - Information and communication barriers - Technology barriers Learn how the veterinary field is embracing accessibility in the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association — Society of British Columbia Veterinarians Chapter’s quarterly publication: https://lnkd.in/g8nhg5Wp #Accessibility #InclusionMatters #VeterinaryMedicine

Every child and family deserves to feel welcome in libraries, so they can exercise their imaginations and connect through storytelling. Our client British Columbia Library Association (BCLA) is doing important work in this space and we’re delighted to spotlight their leadership. This summer, they hosted a workshop in collaboration with AIDE Canada on the topic of "Creating Autism-Friendly Libraries." They shared free resources and actionable ideas for staff training, policies, and programs for libraries of all sizes and budgets. The recording is now available for everyone to view and benefit from. Watch the recording at https://lnkd.in/gkNw5fVZ #Autism #Libraries #Accessibility

Today is World Mental Health Day. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. We believe there’s power in sharing strategies for promoting mental health, especially in the workplace. The Mental Health Commission of Canada has a great list of resources to help employers create a psychologically safe and supportive environment for employees experiencing mental health challenges. The last two months have been an exciting time for the Untapped Accessibility team as we onboarded multiple new team members! Allow us to introduce our new Executive Assistant, Megan Ingram (they/she). They are a queer, multiply-disabled accessibility advocate with a passion for project management, planning coordination, and equitable education. Meg holds an M.A. in Sociology, with a focus in disability studies from Queen’s University, and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Victoria. They most recently worked as a Teaching Adjunct at Queen’s University’s School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, where they taught on the intersections of disability, mental health, and public policy. Meg also enjoys a creative practice in documentary film. Ultimately, across all facets of their life, Meg is guided by an orientation to accessibility and equity based in both their own lived-experience as a queer multiply-disabled person, their experience being raised by a disabled mother, and an enduring commitment to their communities. October is both ADHD Awareness Month and Dyslexia Awareness Month. Given that approximately 30-50% of adults with ADHD have a learning disability, and dyslexia is one of the most common forms of learning disabilities, a proactive approach to accessible employment includes being prepared to support employees with a variety of accommodations. Luckily, there are great resources helping employers to identify ways to support an employee, whether or not you know the employee’s particular type of disability. Our favourite resource is the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), which offers free, expert guidance on workplace accommodations. Their searchable database allows you to find solutions based on a health condition, or the kind of limitation a person experiences. For example, if any employee shares that fluorescent lights are a barrier to them, or that a loud open office is impacting their productivity, you can visit JAN for ideas about how to support them. We’re delighted to announce that Sarah Molder (she/her) is now a full-time Accessibility Consultant at Untapped Accessibility! We’ve loved having Sarah’s wonderful skills and energy on our team since she joined us as an associate earlier this year. With her talent as a writer and researcher, Sarah has already taken the lead on writing accessibility plans for many of our values-driven clients. While working as a member of our associate consultant pool, she also collaborated closely with us on the development of the School Site Accessibility Assessment Tool for BC for the BC Council of Administrators of Inclusive Support In Education (BC CAISE). Given her background in creating meaningful employment experiences for youth and adults with disabilities, Sarah will play a key role in supporting our clients as they prepare for BC’s Accessibility Employment Standards, which will launch in 2025.
