The Rise of Biologicals and Specialty Fertilizers: A Report on Agribusiness Strategy, Progress and Initiatives ◼︎◼︎◼︎ I’ve conducted an in-depth review of the top fertilizer and crop protection companies, delving into their annual reports, quarterly earnings calls, and key announcements to uncover critical insights into their biologicals and specialty product businesses. This analysis has been built out into a report that highlights their strategic moves, including partnerships, investments, acquisitions, current revenue, and growth targets. More importantly, I’ve identified emerging trends and potential next steps that these industry leaders may take to shape the future of crop inputs. If you're looking to stay ahead of industry shifts, this comprehensive look into their playbooks will provide the insights needed to inform your own strategy. One suggestion from the report, and previous Upstream Ag Insights writings, has already come to fruition just this week - BASF announced a partnership with Acadian Plant Health™. Influencing the Market vs. Letting the Market Influence You ◼︎◼︎◼︎ Morgan Housel has talked about the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world. In business, often, theis means the stories we tell ourselves about the market. This aligns with a theorem that states "If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences." "Poor commodity prices mean a down year for our sales" "Farmers are having profitability challenges, we should forecast less" Well intentioned, but are are they locking in a years worth of performance before the season even begins? This week I broke down what we can learn from contrasting the views and comments from companies like NACHURS and The Andersons, Inc. with views and actions from The Mosaic Company and BW-Fusion. A few quick highlights from The Context Network's 2024 Biotech Traits Commercialized (BTC) Study: •2023 was a record trait launch year for both transgenic traits and non-transgenic traits with small entities outside the big four being the largest and fastest growing segment. •From 2018 to 2023, the total number of pipeline traits increased across every crop illustrating the expanded research & investment across all agricultural crops. •BASF, Bayer and Corteva Agriscience have the highest percentage of their regulatory approvals globally associated with “food” based traits. and many more!

BASF Agriculture Solutions Capital Markets Day Highlights and Analysis ◼︎◼︎◼︎ Recently, I highlighted the rationale behind the announced spin-out, and last week BASF shared some components of their business and while there weren't a lot of specific details shared, there are some interesting considerations to think about in looking at their materials: a. Will BASF acquire a bio-based entity moving forward? Their pipeline appears bare when it comes to biologicals. b. BASF emphasized digital solutions. How will BASF deploy their emphasized digital offerings in North America when factoring in channel influence? How does adoption chain risk impact them? c. How are they positioned with R&D expenditure and efficiency compared to Bayer and Corteva? Plus more on BASFs new strategic direction.
