A non-invasive pulsed laser therapy developed by VCHRI researcher Dr. Mads Daugaard and his team shows promise as an initial step in cancer cell destruction before patients undergo immunotherapy. “Our data promotes long-pulsed photothermal therapy as a safe and effective strategy for enhancing therapeutic responses and bladder cancer targeting,” explains Dr. Daugaard. “This could be a highly useful therapy for a variety of cancers.” Learn more about Dr. Daugaard’s research: https://lnkd.in/gmHCE_mK #HealthResearch #HealthInnovation #CancerResearch

Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) contribute to 1 in 9 emergency department visits. Even more concerning, 1 in 3 of these are due to repeated prescriptions of the same drug. ActionADE is an application that allows providers to document and communicate standardized ADE information to prevent re-exposures to harmful medications. “When you go to a doctor, they can generally look up all your medications. What they don’t know is if you’ve had problems with certain drugs,” shares Glen Medcalf, who experienced several adverse reactions to his diabetes medication. “ActionADE could ensure that specialists, general practitioners or hospital staff have the information needed to act quickly on your past history.” Discover Glen's journey: https://ow.ly/xmkq50Ta3a4 #HealthResearch #EmergencyCare #AdverseDrugEvents

A novel human-teleoperated ultrasound device could be operated by patients, family members or friends, with virtual support from sonographers or radiologists. This discovery explored by VCHRI investigator Dr. Tim Salcudean could significantly enhance health care access in rural and remote communities. “To perform an ultrasound requires quite a bit of training, along with skill and dexterity,” notes Dr. Salcudean. “Enabling a non-expert to perform this task remotely under the guidance of an expert is no trivial exercise.” Learn more about Dr. Salcudean’s research in a Canadian Healthcare Technology story: https://ow.ly/whfR50T4nK8 #HealthResearch #HealthInnovation #Telehealth

The role of emergency departments in providing life-saving care can extend into longer-term treatment plans for people with opioid use disorder (OUD). VCHRI investigator Dr. Jessica Moe and clinical pharmacy specialist Dr. Katherin Badke researched emergency department health care worker perceptions on connecting people with OUD to the first-line treatment. “Emergency departments provide immediate, front-line access and are therefore ideal locations to identify people who are at risk of overdose, and to initiate interventions to provide support and mitigate that risk profile,” says Dr. Moe. “Our team is building the knowledge base to positively impact clinical practice.” This International Overdose Awareness Day, learn more about the research in the latest issue of Hospital News: https://ow.ly/iZLh50TagEh #HealthResearch #OverdosePrevention #IOAD2024
