Researchers at the Cellular and Regenerative Medicine Centre, BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) and Simon Fraser University (SFU) are making significant strides in understanding hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) by utilizing beating cells derived from human-induced pluripotent stem cells. This cutting-edge approach is set to transform the study of HCM disease progression and the development of personalized interventions for children with HCM. While HCM is relatively rare, it is one of the most common genetic heart diseases in children and the leading known cause of sudden cardiac arrest in youth and elite athletes. "Until very recently, HCM research primarily used mouse models or cardiac cell samples, but there are significant limitations associated with both of these methods," says Dr. Glen Tibbits, co-director of the Cellular and Regenerative Medicine Centre at BCCHR and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and in the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology at SFU. Beating heart cells developed in the lab from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) are changing all of this. In a recent paper published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, Dr. Tibbits, alongside Dr. Shubhayan Sanatani and their research team, highlights the remarkable advances in HCM disease modelling made possible by these specialized stem cells. "We can now test how patients will respond to different interventions and medications using hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes before we even introduce them into a patient's treatment protocol," says Dr. Tibbits. "This can ultimately result in much safer and effective disease management for these kids."
