Building Healthy Communities.

About us

YMCA BC is a charity dedicated to strengthening the foundations of community. We are 4,000 volunteers and staff working together with more than 150,000 people across British Columbia who believe in helping children and families reach their full potential. We are a charity dedicated to strengthening the foundations of community. For over 130 years we’ve cared for kids, shaped leaders for tomorrow and helped generations of people come together to find support, get healthier and make friends for life. We are determined to be a genuine, welcoming, hopeful place that is nurturing and fun. This is the community we want. A community where we share a sense of social responsibility; experience better health in spirit, mind and body; and where children and families can thrive.

Let’s celebrate the champions of early childhood education!   The first five years of a child’s life are crucial for their development. Canada’s highly trained Early Childhood Educators are the backbone of this growth, providing enriched environments where young minds can thrive. They don’t just supervise; they deliver high-quality, evidence-based programs that prepare children for school and future success.   At the YMCA we deeply value our Early Childhood Educators who are providing high-quality care for children and supporting families. As a charity that is committed to building vibrant, healthy and inclusive communities where everyone can reach their full potential, we are grateful for the hundreds of YMCA BC Early Childhood Educators, who are at the heart of all our programs. Through their impactful work, each day they provide children with healthy, happy experiences and opportunities to learn, grow and thrive.   Let's recognize and support Early Childhood Educators at the YMCA and across Canada, today and every day. Last week, YMCA BC had the pleasure of attending the UBCM Conference in Vancouver. Our team met with local and provincial leaders to discuss the many ways the Y provides important social infrastructure in communities across BC. We also discussed how we collaborate with municipalities to broaden access to life-enhancing programs and services. Early learning and child care programs; mental wellness support for youth, teens, and adults; newcomer services, and employment services are all essential for our growing and diverse communities. #UBCM2024

YMCA BC would like to congratulate two important members of our Y community whose appointments to the Order of British Columbia were announced earlier this month. YMCA BC Board of Directors member Cathy Ulrich (left) was recognized for her legacy of health care leadership during a career that spanned more than four decades, including 16 years as President & CEO of Northern Health. "Her legacy of compassionate leadership, integrity, and commitment to excellence in health care continues to resonate, setting a high standard for future health care leaders in BC and beyond," read a statement from the Province of BC. Meanwhile, Lily Lee was also among the 12 appointees announced. Lily joins her late husband, Robert H. Lee, as a member of the Order. YMCA BC is one of many organizations who have benefitted from the Lees' generosity, with their contributions to the Y acknowledged in the name of our Downtown Vancouver centre of community. "Lily's commitment to education, healthcare and housing continues to benefit those in need. Her enduring legacy of service and philanthropy exemplifies her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others," said a statement from the province. Congratulations to both of these amazing women on their well-deserved appointments to the Order of British Columbia. Read more about each honouree via the links below.
