The only global fund exclusively dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of cultural heritage in conflict zones.
Info
The International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas (ALIPH) is the only global fund exclusively dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of cultural heritage in conflict zones and post-conflict situations. It was founded in March 2017 in response to the massive destruction in recent years of outstanding, often ancient, cultural heritage, particularly in the Middle East and the Sahel region. Based in Geneva, this Swiss foundation has the status of an international organization. ALIPH finances concrete projects carried out by associations, foundations, academic, cultural and heritage institutions, and international organizations. Projects financed by ALIPH target monuments and sites, museums and their collections, documents, archives and manuscripts, and intangible heritage. Projects may be carried out prior to a conflict to limit the risk of destruction, during a conflict to ensure the security of heritage, or in post-conflict contexts to enable populations to once again enjoy their cultural heritage. ALIPH selects a wide variety of projects through regular calls for proposals. When urgent intervention is needed, ALIPH has a dedicated rolling Emergency Relief funding scheme. All projects are thoroughly reviewed by ALIPH’s Scientific Committee and approved by ALIPH’s Foundation Board.

In celebration of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 🎥, our heartfelt congratulations to the Institut national de l'audiovisuel and Yousuf Jan Nesar on winning the FIAT/IFTA Archive Achievement Award 2024 in Excellence in Media Preservation and Migration category! Through our partnership with Institut national de l'audiovisuel, we supported the digitization, cataloging, and preservation of Nesar’s vast audiovisual archive, capturing over 35 years of Afghan history from 1985 until 2021. Over 5,000 hours of invaluable footage were evacuated from Kabul during summer 2021, safeguarding an essential record of #Afghanistan's contemporary history for researchers and future generations. This is ALIPH’s first project in preserving audiovisual archives at risk. 📹 Watch the video https://bit.ly/4e2MOmZ to learn more about Nesar's collection and the work of our partner Institut national de l'audiovisuel. ➡️ Also, explore our second project with UNESCO #Beirut on emergency preservation of Tele Liban’s documentary heritage in #Lebanon 📺 https://bit.ly/4hjKLhb.

Director of Communications and Partnerships at ALIPH | PhD Comparative Literature | Peabody-winning / Emmy-nominated Producer
It was extra special for me to be interviewed by the CBC yesterday on the threat to cultural heritage during times of war. CBC newscasters provided the soundscape of my childhood. I heard their voices every morning in the kitchen during breakfast and then again at the end of the day when dinner was being prepared. That the CBC shed light - on a national level - on how and why cultural heritage is endangered across conflicts and to be the ALIPH - International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas spokesperson for this report was doubly meaningful for me. https://lnkd.in/ddDNyfxs

Our heartfelt congratulations to the #GrandPrix winners of the Europa Nostra Awards! 🎉 International National Trusts Organisation, The National Trust of Georgia, REMPART and to all the Georgian and international volunteers and experts who came together to make this project possible. We are very proud to have supported the Tsiskarauli Tower restoration!
So happy for all the winners at last night's European Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards. Particularly proud of the International National Trusts Organisation members honoured - National Trust's Hardwick Hall and Boulouki - and absolutely delighted for our partners on the Tsiskarauli Tower restoration project, who won a coveted Grand Prix! 🎉 🙌 🎖 Funded with a grant from ALIPH - International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas, and working with The National Trust of Georgia, REMPART, Stowarzyszenie "Wieża Książęca w Siedlęcinie" / "The Ducal Tower of Siedlecin" Association and National Trust, it was a truly European project. We restored a beautiful tower. Which is a huge achievement in itself. But it's the way we did it that's extraordinary: In a spirit of peacebuilding and European unity with partners and volunteers from across the continent. We brought together people from different communities, generations and backgrounds, to share their knowledge and pass on skills. And the impact of our work continues to resonate, inspiring ongoing efforts in heritage conservation and the development of civil society in Georgia. I am so proud of this project and our partners but particularly all the incredible volunteers and community members who invested so much in this work ❤️ Deeply grateful to ALIPH for funding it and to Europa Nostra for recognising the power of citizen engagement and collaboration 🙏

Musée d’art et d'histoire de Genève - MAH has just opened the exhibition “Heritage at Risk” (« Patrimoine en péril »). On the 70th anniversary of the #HagueConvention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Armed Conflict, this exhibition explores the role of museums in the face of threats to cultural heritage. It highlights the history of Switzerland and the City of Geneva in implementing the Convention and protecting cultural property, the engagement of the Museum of Art & History in protecting its collection in case of disasters and sheltering endangered collections, such as those from #Gaza taking center stage in this exhibition. Thank you to Musée d’art et d'histoire de Genève - MAH and to Ville de Genève for shedding the light on this topic and including some projects ALIPH has supported in the display. Visitors can watch three ALIPH films: 🔹 Restoration of monumental statues at the Mosul Museum https://bit.ly/3yAf1lZ 🔹 Protecting cultural heritage in Ukraine https://bit.ly/3TceYVs 🔹 Preserving ancient manuscripts in Mali https://bit.ly/3NgtoAb The exhibition also showcases photos of cultural heritage restoration projects supported by ALIPH in #Palestine, #Iraq, #Lebanon, and #Syria. 🎉 Exciting News: Shortlisted ICCROM-Sharjah Award 🏛️✨ I am delighted to announce that our project Managing Libya’s cultural heritage MaLiCH funded by ALIPH had been shortlisted for fourth cycle of the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practice in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region (2023-2024). MaliCH project is a collaborative initiative between King's College London, the Libyan Department of Antiquities, the Ghadames Development Authority, and the Nile Palace Foundation in Cairo, funded by ALIPH - International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas. Work began in Ghadames’ Old town in 2020, focusing on documenting both the tangible and intangible attributes of the town, as well as its traditional crafts. This was followed by the restoration and rehabilitation of a partially demolished historic building, using traditional construction techniques. Each stage of this process has been documented. The restored building has now been transformed into a visitor centre, aiming to preserve Ghadames’ rich cultural heritage while enhancing local community engagement. The project also collaborated with the Women’s Training Centre in Ghadames, partnering with a team of local craftswomen to incorporate elements of traditional “Zanjafoor” craft into the interior spaces of the centre, using authentic materials and designs. The cultural centre will host permanent exhibitions that showcase the history of Ghadames, its traditional building techniques, and handicrafts. Furthermore, the centre aims to foster connections between different regions of Libya through a shared appreciation of heritage. A joint committee has been established to ensure the continuity of community engagement and to maintain ongoing efforts in heritage preservation. #DepartmentofAntiquitiesLIBYA #GhadamesCityforPromotionandDevelopmentAuthority
