  • 🎉 Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples! 🌱 #WorldIndigenousDay aims to raise awareness on the need to respect and recognise the role of Indigenous populations as bearers of significant cultural traditions, skills, languages and knowledge. Because of their marginalisation, often the result of the lasting effects of colonisation or climate change, Indigenous peoples frequently face threats to their cultural tangible and intangible heritage. 📚 ICOMOS National Committees, Scientific Committees and dedicated Working Groups such as the Working Group on Indigenous Heritage or Our Common Dignity - Rights Based Approaches often conduct research on the importance of Indigenous heritage protection. ▫️ Read the 2023 ICOMOS Australia publication on Indigenous cultural heritage legislation in Australia: https://buff.ly/3WBWyhp ▫️ Read about the Our Common Dignity Working Group's achievements: https://buff.ly/4703zMu 📖 Indigenous heritage was central to the ICOMOS 2023 General Assembly and Scientific Symposium in Sydney, Australia, where best practices in Indigenous heritage protection were shared through case studies. Participants also provided insights on the issues of education, resilience, rights-based approaches, local community empowerment and participation within the World Heritage process. ▫️ Read the GA2023 Book of Abstracts: https://buff.ly/46FwRkG

  • ICOMOS World Heritage Transhumance Initiative 🌿🐐 Defining a thematic approach towards sustaining transhumance cultural landscapes in a changing environment 🌱 The 20th century saw a decline in the #Transhumance lifestyle due to various factors, including economic factors as well as #ClimateChange, leading to the erosion of environment and built heritage, the disintegration of communities, and the deterioration of intangible cultural practices. 🤝 The project "Defining a thematic approach towards sustaining transhumance cultural landscapes in a changing environment" is led by ICOMOS in partnership with the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan . It aims to build a better understanding of transhumance as a sustainable socio-ecological system, improve the representation of transhumance-related heritage in the #WorldHeritage List and international programmes, and identify key management challenges for transhumance heritage. 💼 In 2025, an international conference on Transhumance Cultural Landscapes will be held in Azerbaijan to discuss the heritage values of the transhumance way of life and gather information on management policy approaches to the safeguarding and sustainability of transhumance practices. ℹ️ Read the press release: https://buff.ly/3VNIMrE
