More than twenty five years of advancing and supporting health policy and systems research
Info
For more than 25 years, the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (the Alliance) has been working to improve the health of those in low- and middle-income countries by supporting the generation and use of evidence that strengthens health systems. As an international partnership hosted by the World Health Organization, we work together with organizations around the world to: - Provide a unique forum for the health policy and systems research community; - Support institutional capacity for the conduct and uptake of health policy and systems research; - Stimulate the generation of knowledge and innovations to nurture learning and resilience in health systems; and - Increase the demand for and use of knowledge for strengthening health systems. Throughout all our work, we prioritize and promote systems thinking, which recognizes that the whole of the system is more than its constituent parts. We also recognize the need to engage diverse actors in health policy and systems research – we target our support to ensure better inclusion of and participation by women, those in low- and middle-income countries and other historically underrepresented groups.

Digital solutions for primary health care have pros and cons: + can boost job creation & digital literacy + can highlight health inequities - can stress on health workers. 10 research teams shared lessons at a recent workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: https://lnkd.in/eYQ4xHfP

How much does it cost to purchase an insecticide-treated bed net to help combat the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria? According to the Against Malaria Foundation, it can be as little as US$ 2. Based on this and considering other factors – like additional costs for distribution, the average lifespan of the net and its effectiveness at preventing malaria – it is possible to create a model to determine how much it costs to prevent someone from contracting malaria and to estimate how many extra years of a healthy life they will gain by avoiding the disease. Similarly, there are models for the cost-effectiveness of employing an additional nurse in a health facility. These types of models can help policy-makers and funders decide how best to allocate spending. But what if the question is how access to services or quality of care can be improved by investing in better information systems? Or, what are the benefits of financing a new outreach programme for community health care workers? Does it compare with providing another bed net? The Alliance is starting a new project with Health Systems Global, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to begin to answer some of these questions. Here's a recap off our kick off consultation > https://lnkd.in/eYCH8Qbm
