The aerospace student initiative of ETH Zurich. Join us on our way to space!

Info

ARIS (Akademische Raumfahrtsinitiative Schweiz) is a student initiative at ETH Zurich focusing on various projects related to aerospace technology. In ARIS, we combine inspiration for space exploration, hands-on project work and personal development. Initiated and lead by students from ETH Zürich, HSLU and ZHAW we build sounding rockets to win the European Rocketry Challenge in the highest category by 2024. Together with our partners from industry and academia, we aggregate the required knowledge. And on the way there, we educate future engineers and leaders in hands-on project work. Our ultimate goal: to fly a student demonstrator in Low Earth Orbit by 2029!

Learning about extraterrestrial life detection at NASA JPL 🌌 Two ETH Zurich students, Marco T. and Adrian Fuhrer, passionate about space and members of ARIS just concluded a seven-month stay at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, focusing on developing instruments for detecting life on other planets, particularly on Enceladus, a moon of Saturn. Their work in the Chemical Analysis and Life Detection Lab involved understanding chemical processes essential for detection of extraterrestrial life. We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of Project HELIOS at the beginning of July 2024 🚀 This ambitious endeavor, focused on developing a bi-liquid rocket engine, had three primary objectives: conducting an engine parameter study, enhancing throttling capability and accuracy, and building a sound suppression system. Despite some timeline delays impacting the engine parameter study, we achieved remarkable success in our other goals. Our team developed both open-loop and closed-loop controllers. The open-loop controller was rigorously tested during water cold flows this year. Along with the closed-loop controller, it will get tested again during next year’s firing campaign. Additionally, our sound suppression system was a notable triumph. Designed and manufactured during the HELIOS project cycle, it was successfully tested in our firing campaign. 🔥 At this point, we also want to thank all our sponsors for supporting HELIOS! A special thanks to Messer Schweiz AG for generously providing the propellants essential for our testing, and to Franke Group for manufacturing the new FSS tank we designed. Your contributions were invaluable! 💫 HELIOS is integral to ARIS rocketry, and its accomplishments will serve as the foundation for next year’s project, which aims to develop ARIS' first bi-liquid flight engine. We look forward to building on this success and achieving even greater milestones together.⭐️ Video by Sarina Schuler #ARIS #TeamHELIOS #Space #Innovation #Technology

🚀 1st ever Swiss Rotating Detonation Engine We are excited to announce our newest venture: Project PERSEUS. As part of ARIS, we are building the first Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) in Switzerland. RDREs are an exciting new propulsion technology promising an increase in efficiency of 25%! They can provide more power and efficiency with less weight and mechanical complexity than traditional rocket engines. With these benefits, RDREs are likely to become extremely relevant for future spaceflight. And what better way to prepare for this future than getting hands-on experience with such a propulsion system? In the last half year, Thomas Ebnöther has been writing his Bachelor Thesis at OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences about RDREs and Simi Wespi & Noah Giger aimed for an RDRE Focus Project ETH Zürich. With this, we gathered a group of experienced technical advisors and coaches, spearheaded by our Head Coach Aaron Ehrat. Now it is time for action! The main objective of project PERSEUS is to successfully build and fire a small RDRE on ARIS’s existing Liquid-Rocket-Testbench before the year ends. PERSEUS marks a significant milestone in ARIS journey to push the boundaries of propulsion technology. If the project succeeds, ARIS will be the first student organization in the world to have fired an RDRE.🔥 #ARIS #TeamPerseus #Space #Innovation #Technology
