Cicada Threat Alert! 📣 The reed glasswing cicada (Pentastiridius leporinus) is causing significant crop losses in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and southern Germany 🇩🇪. Traditionally found in sugar beets, this pest has extended its reach to potato crops 🥔 causing serious quality issues in potatoes for chips and French fries. 🦠 The threat arises when the cicadas carry bacteria such as Arsenophonus or Phytoplasma solani, which they transmit when sucking on leaves from May to mid-July. This can cause yellowing of the leaves and low sugar content in sugar beets. Potatoes may wilt or develop air tubers above the soil. In Switzerland, potato crop losses could reach up to 30%. The main problem is the reduced baking quality of processing potatoes. Affected potatoes show undesirable browning when fried, making it difficult for domestic producers to meet quality standards. 👩🔬 This year, the potato industry, Agroscope and Bioreba launched a research project to tackle the problem. Cicadas are now found in potatoes, sugar beets and even certain vegetables such as celery, with potential risks to onions 🧅 and carrots 🥕 in Germany. 🔍 Solutions? Crop rotation strategies are challenging on a large scale, but climatic conditions may play a role. Cooler temperatures and rain have reduced outbreaks this year, providing some relief. Let's continue to be proactive in addressing these crop threats! 🌍 #PlantHealth #CropProtection #AgricultureInnovation #Potatoes #Kartoffeln #Kartoffelanbau #SugarBeets #Cicadas #Zikade #Zikaden #ReedGlasswingCicada #PentastiridiusLeporinus

"Did someone say Swiss chocolate?" 👀😋 Since Monday, our Scientific Product Manager Beatrice Manser has been spreading Swiss charm around the Calibre Scientific headquarters in Holland, OH. How? By casually "misplacing" some Swiss chocolate by the coffee corner... Subtle lobbying, you say? Well, maybe just a nibble! 😉🍫 #HigherCalibre #SweetStrategy
