Last Friday, CarbonPool Principal Weather Modeller Emmanuel Sanchez spoke to a group of students at the North Carolina State University class, "Financial Mathematics" on our carbon insurance model and his own path to CarbonPool. At CarbonPool, when faced with a problem, our typical answer is: "Well, let's do the maths." That's because we don't just depend heavily on a science and math-based approach to our work--for our model to work, we've had to create our own mathematical and statistical models to answer questions like:   🌳How do we assess a carbon project with best-in-class precision, analyzing factors like tree species, local climate, historical and future weather patterns, planting schedules, and many more to accurately estimate a project's expected carbon sequestration?   🔥How do we build AI-powered algorithms that account not only for the natural-related risks in our Carbon Risk Model, but also for those risks related to human activities?   💵How do we make sure that our carbon credit assets are sufficient to always pay our claims and ensure our solvency is the same as any other regulated Swiss insurer?    Thanks to North Carolina State University and Patrick Roberts for having Emmanuel highlight these and other innovations coming out of CarbonPool.

How are mangroves one of the unsung heroes of nature-based carbon removal?🌍 During his on-site visit to Senegal, Beat Krauer met with the local Senegalese team leading ALLCOT’s Mangrove Restoration project in the Saloum Delta coastal region of Senegal.   Climate change has wreaked havoc on the region, leading to degraded mangroves, declining fish populations, and biodiversity loss. Rising sea levels and coastal erosion have created additional obstacles for local communities.   Allcot’s project is working to reverse this damage by restoring mangroves. While many of the geographies in which they thrive have a high climate risk profile, mangroves stand out for their efficiency in carbon sequestration and resilience to extreme weather conditions.   But projects like Allcot's also play an important social and ecological role. Here are some highlights from the Allcot project members Beat spoke with:   👥 Diene emphasized the project's social impact, with locals actively participating for both personal and community benefit, while deepening their connection to the land and its resources. 🎣 Arame highlighted the vital role of the restoration project in regenerating land and natural resources. She noted that once mangroves are restored, it enables Senegalese women to harvest oysters (see picture N°3 below), while fishermen benefit from the increased fish population. 🐚 Alioune explained the cyclical nature of mangrove ecosystems. As oysters, crabs, and other creatures establish themselves in the mud, they attract birds and other wildlife to the area. This natural process generates a virtuous cycle, helping the ecosystem to regenerate and grow stronger over time.   Of course, no project is without risk. Mangroves, while largely resilient against fire, still are vulnerable to drought, flooding, and other risks.
