Spreading the spirit of CERN scientific curiosity, for the inspiration and benefit of society

Info

The purpose of the Foundation is to support and promote the mission of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and disseminate its benefits to the wider public. The Foundation operates nationally and internationally to pursue its mission, across three main areas: Education & Outreach, Innovation & Knowledge Exchange, and Culture & Creativity. Since 2018, the CERN & Society Foundation also supports and promotes the operation of the Globe of Science and Innovation, notably through its use as a venue for scientific exhibitions, conferences, meetings and public debates. Our main objectives are to: 1. Promote public understanding of science and the various ways it affects our daily life; 2. Encourage and support young people’s interest in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, with an emphasis on physics and engineering (STEM); 3. Improve people’s lives by means of innovative technologies; 4. Build capacity in developing countries by providing people with scientific knowledge and tools; and 5. Foster creative synergies between science and culture, stimulating inspiration and enriching the cultural landscape. Since 2017, the Foundation Board has decided to focus its efforts on projects targeting Youth & Education.

🚀 Meet the Artists Behind the exhibition #ExploringtheUnknown at CERN’s Science Gateway! 🔬 Yunchul Kim Yunchul Kim, a pioneer in merging art with scientific exploration, in residence at CERN in 2016 as the winner of Arts at CERN's prestigious Collide Award. He was invited to develop a new art commission for the CERN’s Science Gateway, inspired by his dialogues with theoretical physicists. ✨ His work ‘Chroma VII’, is a testament to his artistic vision. Exploring the behaviour of matter, this kinetic sculpture, reacts dynamically to friction and pressure, creating changes in colour and pattern in a mesmerizing interplay between art and science. The installation transforms scientific principles into a tangible experience, pushing the boundaries of how we perceive the invisible forces that shape our universe. 🔬 #Doyouknow that the winning teams of Beamline for Schools 2024 Competition are arriving soon at CERN and DESY ? 🏆 💥 The “SPEEDers” team’s experiment focuses on beam diagnostics. This group of students from the USA aim to measure and analyse the Smith-Purcell (SP) radiation emitted by different diffraction gratings when DESY’s electron or positron beams pass by. The ultimate goal of their experiment is to research SP-radiation as a tool for beam diagnostics.💥 Follow their journey in one of biggest laboratory for particle physics! #CERN #CERNandSociety #BL4S #students #impact

SCIENCE IS MAGIC THAT WORKS! 🎆 🔊Hear from Connie Potter, the Project Leader behind CERN's festival program, as she describes the joy of being there—meeting people who have never heard of CERN and seeing their smiles and enthusiasm after attending one of these shows.🤩 🫵🏻If you represent a company interested in science, education, and outreach, and would like to see your logo on stage alongside high-level speakers such as the CERN Director-General or the International Space Station Commander, please reach out to us at partnerships.fundraising@cern.ch. 📩 Let’s collaborate to make science accessible to everyone.🤝 #CERNandSociety #Festival #science #music #STEMEducation #impact #company

A RECIPE FOR INCREDIBLE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION Take a bunch of dynamic, passionate, hard-working people, who love communicating science, add the most prestigious scientific laboratory in the world, mix in some music festivals run by some real ‘out of the box’ thinkers, then blend in some of the brightest people in the world and sprinkle on top a Nobel Prize winner, the ISS commander, a science-mad rock star and TV stars .. what do you have? The CERN Festival Programme 2025.   The 2025 season is now over and it has been not only a wild and crazy ride but a huge success. Two established festivals welcoming science since a few years – WOMAD in the UK and Ostrava in the Czech Republic, and two new festivals – Smukfest in Denmark and Rototom in Spain, all were lucky enough to be a stop on our tour this Summer.   In total, our early numbers have us with over 16000 people in total over the four festivals – coming to hear a talk, see a show or join in a workshop, have a science tattoo, make a climate change bracelet, meet the A.I. experts and just chat with a scientist.   Our speakers were magical, our programmes were incredible, our crew – made up of physics students in each country, were quite honestly some of the best people I have ever worked with. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.   We have now requests to do more festivals in addition to continuing what we are already doing, but we are few in the core team and its not our full time job, and have only whatever financial support we can get from the wonderful CERN & Society Foundation   So.. throwing into the mix of this perfect recipe – an opportunity for one or several clever companies that can see the huge potential of having their logo at these events with these speakers (see photo with the brilliant astronaut Andreas Mogensen) CERN produces not only life-changing science, but shares its science in life-changing ways. We’ve had people come up to us all over Europe saying - we never had anything like this science here before in our city/town, I never realized how much my kid loved science, I hated science at school but I wandered by the first day and I’ve come back every day since.   As my friends Daniel Stach and Spencer Kelly say ‘science is cool, science rocks’   But I’ll leave this post with my own quote, that for the first time ever I had money to buy, this neon sign that enchanted audiences everywhere and with the help of my wonderful co-producers Phill F. and Kaj Siebert, we managed to transport to 3 countries and fix on all kinds of surfaces   SCIENCE. IS. MAGIC. THAT. WORKS   Rock on…
