At CYBATHLON 2024, teams demonstrated impressive and cutting-edge leg prostheses, each uniquely designed to enhance mobility and improve daily life for people with lower limb disabilities. From BruBotics’ (Belgium) active transfemoral prosthesis with two active joints for natural movement, to the cost-effective and 3D-printed "Knee4me" by Contur 2000 (Poland), each innovation was meant for diverse needs. Össur (Iceland) showcased their Power Knee with an advanced microprocessor, while SoftFoot Pro (Italy) focused on a passive, adaptive design for navigating uneven ground. NeuroLegs (Switzerland) introduced sensory feedback technology, adding ‘touch’ to their prosthetic for enhanced stability. From waterproof, everyday-use solutions by ottobock.X3 (Switzerland) to REHAB TECH LEG’s (Italy) Omnia that integrates hydraulics and carbon for a smooth, energy-efficient walk, CYBATHLON 2024 highlighted the vast potential of leg prostheses to support freedom and independence. This year’s CYBATHLON introduced the Jury Award to recognise teams whose assistive tech innovations excel in usability, adaptability, and life-enhancing impact for people with disabilities. Headed by Anna Knill, the panel composed of people with disabilities, researchers, and industry experts who assessed the teams and technology, awarding top honours to: WHi Students (Italy) – Brain-Computer Interface: Enhanced EEG-based system focused on mutual learning. OECU&R-Techs (Japan) – Wheelchair: Omni-wheelchair with versatile mobility & daily-use robotic arm. Sight Guide (Switzerland) – Vision Assistance: Compact navigation system using real-time mapping. KAIST (South Korea) – Exoskeleton: Advanced 12-DOF exoskeleton for balance & autonomous movement. SoftFoot Pro (Italy) – Leg Prosthesis: Adaptive prosthetic foot for improved gait on uneven ground. POLIMI (Italy) – FES Bike: FES-controlled trike with real-time feedback for smooth cycling. BionIT Labs (Italy) – Arm Prosthesis: Adaptive, water-resistant bionic hand with automatic grip. BFH-FAIR (Switzerland) – Assistance Robot: Accessible robotic arm system to support tetraplegic users. At CYBATHLON 2024, teams from around the world brought cutting-edge arm prostheses designed to push the boundaries of assistive technology. From advanced myoelectric devices to body-powered and hybrid models, each prosthesis featured unique capabilities, allowing pilots to take on everyday tasks like carrying bottles, serving food, stacking, hammering a nail, fixing a light bulb, hanging laundry, and tackling the hot wire. These incredible demonstrations highlight the advancements made in assistive technology, fostering greater independence for people with arm prostheses.
