🖍 DSI Mobility Retreat Workshop - August 22nd During this workshop, we took a moment to step back, reflect, and re-evaluate our journey so far. Our discussions centered on three key questions: What do we want to keep? What do we want to change? What should we try out? These reflections served as the foundation for drafting our community’s activity plans for the coming year. Severin von Hünerbein from euforia CH joined us to help spark creativity and guide us in thinking forward—perhaps even into visionary territory. Here's a glimpse into the highlights of our event: 💡 Vision/Potential: ‘Where do we want to go?’ We explored our long-term vision and the potential directions in which we want our community to evolve. 📌 Future Activities: This creative method encouraged participants to envision the future and brainstorm where our community should be in the coming years. It was an inspiring exercise in thinking beyond the present. 🌐 World Café 45: We discussed what inspired us the most during the workshop, identifying key ideas and activities that we want to pursue further. This session was particularly focused on what content and activities are most relevant to us and how we can use these insights to better engage our community. 🚶♂️Next Steps: We concluded by consolidating and concretizing the ideas and activities discussed, setting the stage for actionable plans moving forward. Following members of our community participated in the retreat: Donatella Zingaro, Alexandra Ioana Georgescu, Tumasch Reichenbacher, Nadine Zurkinden, Stefan Lakämper, Claudia Röösli, PhD, Anja Schulze, Sebastiano Caprara, Armand Kapaj and Hoda Bakhshi.

🌐📊📱 Can We Use Anonymised Tracking Data to Learn About Local Communities? Dr Somayeh Dodge, an Associate Professor of Spatial Data Science at the University of California Santa Barbara, recently visited our DSI Community Mobility. Dr Somayeh Dodge is working as a Fellow of the DSI Community Mobility from March to August 2024. Last week, she shared fascinating findings from her research, which delves into movement patterns in human and ecological systems. Mobility Based Diversity Study 🌈 🚶 In 2019, Dr Somayeh Dodge and her MOVE Lab analyzed the #population #diversity in Los Angeles County beyond residential diversity. The found that individuals of the same ethnicity tend to visit similar places. The diversity of places varies throughout the day, with the most diverse moments occurring during lunchtime. Interestingly, Latino places exhibit the lowest diversity. Changing Movement Patterns During Disasters 🏃♂️🔥 Dr Dodge also explored how people #move #during #crises, such as natural disasters. She showed us how in 2018 the fire in Santa Barbara County had an impact on the road network and the mobility patterns of commuters. Most individuals followed the shortest path, but deviations occurred due to imbalances (e.g., avoiding fire-affected areas). 🔬 #Research #Focus: Dr Dodge’s work spans geographic data analytics, knowledge discovery, modeling, and visualization. She investigates movement processes influenced by individual behavior, social interactions, and environmental factors. Her interdisciplinary research covers domains like movement ecology and human mobility. #DSIMobility #UZH UZH Digital Society Initiative #DataScience #SpatialAnalytics #Research #HumanMobility #Ecology #Geospatial #InterdisciplinaryResearch

📢 Last March, I had the privilege of presenting on "ZuriACT: Zurich Accessible CiTy—Why Contextual Information Matters" at the World Information Architecture Day (WIAD) conference, beautifully captured in sketches by the talented illustrator Roland Siegnethaler—heartfelt thanks to the WIDA team for the invitation and great organization. Key Takeaways from my talk: Existing digital services often fail to provide practical navigation guidance for individuals with mobility impairments or restrictions due to the absence of accessibility features such as sidewalk inclinations, crossings, and ramps. This lack of external contextual information tailored to these user groups can result in incomplete routing outcomes that fail to reflect real-world conditions accurately. The ZuriACT pilot project, a collaborative effort between the University of Zurich and the Stadt Zürich, aims to address this issue by establishing a framework for systematically collecting and enriching accessibility features in collaboration with the public. This semester, the Teamwork on Digital Transformation Challenges (10SMDSI_DTC) module is piloting three additional challenges, one of which is under the supervision of Dr. Hoda Bakhshi, a DSI Research Fellow and an active member of the DSI Community Mobility. Hoda's challenge, "Towards an #Inclusive Urban Environment: Applying Digital Tools to Improve Spatial Accessibility in Zurich", seeks to enhance sidewalk accessibility information to optimize and personalize mobility for individuals with impairments and promote inclusive mobility. The project utilizes innovative digital web tools for virtual inspections and measurements of accessibility features in District 1 of the City of Zurich. This initiative promotes #interdisciplinary collaboration, offering students with backgrounds in computer science, geography, social sciences, and health sciences a unique opportunity to contribute to inclusive urban mobility. #DSIMobility Universität Zürich #DigitalTransformationChallenges #DSI
