The 5th of September marked global Plastic Overshoot Day – the point in the year where the amount of plastic waste generated exceeds our ability to manage it.This year, EA - Earth Action’s Plastic Overshoot Day report found that 220 million tonnes of plastic waste is set to be generated in 2024.It showed that on average, 28kg of plastic waste per person will be generated globally, with a steady rise in total plastic waste of 7.11% since 2021.Our findings demonstrate the urgent need for action to protect our environment and health from the threat of plastic pollution. While many corporations and SMEs are already taking steps to tackle this crisis, it is this corporate action along with government collaboration and legislation that will deliver impactful change. With two months to go until the final round of UN negotiations for an international treaty on plastic pollution, the report serves as an urgent reminder for international businesses, governments and SMEs that we can no longer function “business as usual”.We have great hope that 2024 is the year where we see ambition turned into action.Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/empcABPY #PlasticPollution #GlobalPlasticsTreaty

🌍 New Report Alert: Making the Global Plastics Treaty Work for MSMEs 🌍 Thank you to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with WWF, for commissioning EA - Earth Action to delve into the crucial role that Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) play in the plastics industrial transition. We engaged with over 130 MSMEs across the value chain and across the world, to examine the impact of a global plastics treaty on MSMEs. Our main findings are: 💡 MSMEs represent 90% of businesses globally and are crucial for innovation in the plastics industry. 💡 MSME's consider that an ambitious treaty can help level the playing field and drive innovation. 💡 Properly implemented global rules can unlock significant opportunities and benefits for MSMEs, particularly in new markets. 💡 The market for virgin plastic production is expected to shrink, while investments in alternative materials and reuse systems will grow. 💡Job losses in virgin plastic production may be offset by gains in plastic reduction, reuse, and recycling sectors. 💡 MSMEs need support for upskilling, technology transfer, and financial resources to manage the transition effectively. 💡Policy recommendations include differentiated implementation timelines, technology and knowledge transfer, vocational training, and flexible financial instruments to support MSMEs. INC negotiators can be confident that global rules will unlock significant opportunities and benefits across the MSME landscape, provided the treaty includes specific measures to support MSMEs in managing the transition. Explore the full report and join the conversation on how we can make the global plastics treaty work for all businesses. 🔗 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/epnXUPuE #PlasticsTreaty #PlasticPollution #CircularEconomy #MSMEs

🌍 Earth Action is proud to have contributed to the publication of the article “The global apparel industry is a significant yet overlooked source of plastic leakage” in Nature Communications. 📑 This groundbreaking study explores the significant impact of the global apparel industry on plastic pollution. It reveals that in 2019, the apparel industry generated 8.3 million tons of plastic pollution, accounting for 14% of the total plastic pollution across all sectors. The main source of plastic pollution in the apparel supply chain is synthetic clothing. 🔄 To combat this pressing issue, a fundamental shift towards a circular economy and a reduction in synthetic apparel consumption is essential. 🔧 At Earth Action, we are at the forefront of pioneering solutions and initiatives to tackle the plastic pollution crisis and support companies in reducing their plastic footprint.
