Tokyo, Japan—ADB, APRSO, partner organizations, and experts from the transport sector went all in for safe and sustainable urban transport during the APRSO 2024 Annual Meeting on 8-9 October 2024. The two-day event brought in meaningful discussions, technical presentations, and networking and engagement sessions among the participants. More than 110 in-person and online participants from the government, civil society, development partners, research institute, and the private sector shared best practices in urban road safety and sustainable transport management, benchmarked on Japan’s road safety plan, and planned development projects. #APRSO2024 is hosted by the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences (IATSS). The grant fund for this event was received from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) financed by the Government of Japan through the ADB. #APRSO2024 #APRSOAnnualMeeting #SustainableTransport #SafeTransport

The European Traffic Safety Council’s (ETSC) Executive Director, Antonio Avenoso, in an interview with Radio New Zealand sets the record straight for the Minister of Transport about ‘safe system’ speed limits and their direct impact on road crash death and injury. Leading European cities have reduced urban speed limits to 30 km/h with improved road safety, reductions in toxic emissions and journey times were largely unaffected. Antonio Avenoso says “30 km/h is absolutely the way Europe has been heading” and he describes it as “bizarre that New Zealand is moving in the opposite direction”. In describing 100 km/h speed limits on non-median divided rural roads, he warned it is “absolute madness”. It is essential the New Zealand Government reverses their grossly irresponsible approach to introducing blanket and unsafe speed limit increases. https://lnkd.in/gp9TztdM Ministry of Transport (New Zealand) - Te Manatū Waka Simeon Brown NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Auckland Transport Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS) NZ Chapter Julie Anne Genter Simon Kingham RNZ
