Yesterday's #ISTPColloquium was presented by Professor Staffan I. Lindberg, Director of the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg! His talk titled "Autocratization Deepens Worldwide – But Bright Spots (U-Turns) Are Spreading", shed light on the current status and trends of democracy throughout the globe. He shared the latest findings from the V-Dem dataset (v14), offering a deep dive into global trends in democracy and autocracy. It’s concerning to learn that the average level of democracy worldwide has regressed to 1985 levels, with 42 countries currently autocratizing. However, there are “bright spots” – 18 countries are making progress on the democracy index, with some even reversing past autocratic trends. Thank you, Professor Lindberg, for highlighting both the challenges and reasons for optimism in today’s political landscape!
