A unique approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy.

Om oss

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a unique approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy. We provide a multidimensional and disaggregated dataset that reflects the complexity of the concept of democracy as a system of rule that goes beyond the simple presence of elections. We also publish a yearly democracy report and feature user-friendly tools on our website that specially designed to visualize V-Dem data in various forms depending on your needs and interest. The Headquarters is based at the V-Dem Institute, the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. With 5 Principal Investigators (PIs), seventeen Project Managers (PMs) with special responsibility for issue areas, more than thirty Regional Managers (RMs), 134 Country Coordinators (CCs), Research Assistants, and over 4,000 Country Experts (CEs), the V-Dem project is one of the largest social science data collection projects focusing on research.

Yesterday's #ISTPColloquium was presented by Professor Staffan I. Lindberg, Director of the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg! His talk titled "Autocratization Deepens Worldwide – But Bright Spots (U-Turns) Are Spreading", shed light on the current status and trends of democracy throughout the globe. He shared the latest findings from the V-Dem dataset (v14), offering a deep dive into global trends in democracy and autocracy. It’s concerning to learn that the average level of democracy worldwide has regressed to 1985 levels, with 42 countries currently autocratizing. However, there are “bright spots” – 18 countries are making progress on the democracy index, with some even reversing past autocratic trends. Thank you, Professor Lindberg, for highlighting both the challenges and reasons for optimism in today’s political landscape! #GraphOfTheWeek: Afghanistan's Crackdown on Women's Rights This week’s graph depicts the decline in select civil liberties for Afghan women from 2020 (in blue) to 2023 (in red). During the period #Afghanistan regressed from an electoral autocracy to a closed autocracy. Following the Taliban’s 2021 seizure of power, the United Nations labelled the situation as  "gender apartheid". The graph illustrates this drastic change, with five indicators capturing the exclusion of women from political and social spheres. The end of 2023-levels are depicted by the red circle, showing the drastic curtailment of Afghan women’s rights. Taliban decrees and policies systematically target women and girls, severely restricting their access to secondary and higher education, and denying them public life, freedom of speech, and movement. In March 2024 the Taliban announced that women may be stoned to death in punishment for perceived crimes, in what is stated as a continuation of a fight against western influences. Accompanying the Taliban-directed autocracy is a humanitarian crisis, with an estimated 23.7 million people now requiring urgent assistance, where women and other marginalized groups, such as the Hazara community are suffering disproportionally. The impact on women’s mental and physical health has been described as ‘unprecedented’, with a significant increase in feelings of insecurity, and vulnerability to violence. The closer to the middle (0) the worse the situation. Read more about what the chosen variables measure in the V-Dem codebook: https://lnkd.in/dzpqKMrx

#GraphoftheWeek: Increased Polarization in Germany The recent German elections in three eastern states saw the first electoral victory of the far-right since the Second World War with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) win in the state Thuringia. This week’s graph shows how mobilization for autocracy and political polarization have increased in Germany since the far-right party AfD was founded in 2013. In this year’s state elections, AfD came close to victory in Saxony and Brandenburg, with over 30% and 29% of the votes respectively, and winning in Thuringia with almost 33% of the votes. The party has been rising in popularity, entering the national parliament Bundestag in 2017 with 13% of votes and has maintained a similar level of support in federal and European elections. However, the party’s stronghold lies in the eastern states of Germany. Gaining momentum during the 2015 refugee crisis, the party has polarized society around a strong anti-immigration stance and is being investigated by federal intelligence for right wing extremism. The V-Dem indicator ‘mobilization for autocracy’ is capturing aspects of this. International media has expressed concerns that the state elections indicate a shift to extremes: along with the far-right advances, the state elections also saw a strong far left, thus reinforcing the increasing polarization, as captured in the graph above. Bonus Content: The second graph shows a longer perspective for historical reference, covering the period from before the second world war (from 1928 to 2023). #GraphoftheWeek: Democracy Day - Liberal Democracy in the Year of Elections  2024 is the year of elections, with almost half of the world’s population going to the polls. As V-Dem Institute’s 2024 Democracy Report points out, many elections take place in autocratizing countries. This week’s graph shows the Liberal Democracy Index (LDI) for the last twenty years in Georgia, Indonesia, and Tunisia. In celebration of the International Democracy Day, we look at the state of liberal democracy in three countries holding elections this year. The Georgian elections in October come at a critical time: After a controversial law discriminating Western-supported civil society actors as ‘foreign agents’ and the violent handling of pro-democracy protest, the EU froze its membership pledge. In Indonesia, former military strongman Subianto won the presidential elections in February. He has long been accused for human rights abuses and openly questions democracy, which raises concerns for the already-autocratizing country. President Saïed’s grab of power in 2021 halted Tunisia's decade-long progress towards democracy. The authoritarian power grab affected many aspects of democracy, from legislature to media. The presidential election in October takes place amid uncertainties regarding the country’s political future. Elections have the potential to mark a democratic turnaround. However, as V-Dem’s 2024 Election Report shows, elections can also legitimize further autocratization.
