The findings of this study have important implications for assessing planning with the CAS2 in clinical and educational settings. Our findings suggest that although examiners may observe strategies when examinees are completing the planning tasks, examinees are not necessarily aware of the strategies they are using. We recommend carefully evaluating the CAS2 Strategy Assessment Checklist, as some may be difficult to observe. Additionally, it is important to contextualize questions when asking the examinee to explain how they completed the task. Furthermore, the strategies used were not associated with the examinees’ performance. We encourage psychologists to consider the examinee’s age when evaluating planning strategies, as using strategies may be limited by metacognitive capacity. Finally, we encourage considering the individual’s processing speed, as it can impact the efficiency in using strategies and, consequently, their planning performance as measured by the CAS2. Research must continue to be carried out to explore the relationship between strategies and planning performance with the CAS2 to provide more evidence and generate new hypotheses. The findings of our exploratory study provide preliminary evidence for continuing the study of planning strategies with CAS2.
