Gemeinnützige Organisationen

The only foundation dedicated exclusively to building early years literacy in Africa.

Info

The mc2h foundation works to help activate Africa’s potential by nurturing literacy in its youngest citizens. Because literacy is the gateway to learning – and out of poverty. So, when 9 out of 10 children in Africa can't read and write by the age of 10, potentially limiting their options and opportunities for a lifetime, it’s clear that drastic action is required. The mc2h foundation was created to help do just that. We find, support and connect initiatives that help realise our vision of every child in Africa reading fluently by the age of 10. Enabling potential to step into achievement. Follow us for news and information about our work.

🛑 If illiteracy were an illness, it would be deemed a pandemic! 🛑 Nearly one billion people are illiterate, with 90% of children in low-income countries still not being able to read and write a single sentence at the age of 10, despite spending years in school. This heartbreaking reality was the driving force behind setting the course for our family foundation 3 years ago. How can it be that 9 out of 10 children leave school without being able to read and write a single sentence?? We are failing these children. We are failing the parents who send them to school, with hope! Today I wanted to share the work of one brilliant organisation, the Luminos Fund, whose approach to teaching and learning is delivering remarkable literacy results in some of the most challenging settings. Because, unlike a pandemic, literacy can be cured. And see below for Luminos’ solution to how ⬇️ 📚And so we stand beside all those who are working tirelessly in this space, refusing to accept a world where illiteracy continues to steal opportunity from millions of children. #boostingliteracy #literacymatters #readingforall #literacyforall #mc2hfoundation mc2h foundation

Bridging the literacy gap is possible – and here's how Luminos is making it happen! 📚 ⬇️ Despite progress in improving access to schooling, nearly 7 out of 10 children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) cannot read a simple, age-appropriate text by the end of primary school. In our latest blog, our Associate Director of Teaching and Learning, Neha Raheel, explores why education systems in LMICs are falling short—and, more importantly, how we can fix it. At Luminos Fund, we’re proving that with high-quality phonics instruction, every child can learn to read and unlock their full potential. Read it here > https://lnkd.in/enypVvD2

Bravo Luminos Fund for these impressive results. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Impact is one thing, but what TYPE of impact and ensuring impact that LASTS, matters just as much. And these recent results from a follow-up study about the Luminos Funds out-of-school program in Liberia, show just that: 🎯 Sustained learning outcomes, that last across time 🎯 Equal learning outcomes, for boys and girls 🎯 Learnings that translate into other contexts so children can continue their education outside Luminos Beyond just learning, Luminos approach sparks a light for learning, that can last a lifetime ✨✨✨✨✨✨ #lightoflearning #educationmatters #boostliteracy #joyfullearning #readingforall #boostliteracy #theafricanliteracyfoundation

📣 New Report Alert! We’re thrilled to share findings from our one-year follow-up of our #RCT of the Luminos Fund’s Accelerated Learning Program for out-of-school children in Liberia! ⬇️ The Luminos program equips children who have missed years of schooling with foundational literacy and numeracy skills, empowering them to confidently  enroll in mainstream schools. Previously we found that, by the end of program, children could read 4.5x as many words per minute and complete 2x as many addition and subtraction problems as the control group. https://lnkd.in/gqu2fMr6 Here’s what our new follow-up study found: 📈 Enrollment Boost: One year after graduating from the Luminos program, 75% of out-of-school children are enrolled in government or private schools— a 15 percentage points higher rate than the control group. 📖 Sustained Learning Gains: One year later, the positive difference in literacy and numeracy scores between Luminos graduates and the control group is similar to the gains seen at the first endline, showing lasting impact. 🎯Inclusive Impact: The sustained learning gains are similar across age and enrollment history. Across gender, children perform similarly on most literacy and numeracy skills. This suggests that the Luminos program generally empowers children of all backgrounds equally.   🔗 See the full report to explore these findings in detail and IDinsight's recommendations! https://lnkd.in/gmAq4j_P

This manual for social change by Fozia Irfan OBE is a must read! Inspiring, practical and actionable. https://lnkd.in/eK9tzMRn ✋ It is an urgent call to action for philanthropy to go beyond the act of « goodwill », and instead to become a vehicle for profound change. ⭐️ It shows how philanthropy is uniquely positioned because of its independent status, and its ability to tackle multiple, interconnected issues, to change the momentum around social equity and social justice. ❤️And it shows that when guided by principles of purpose, passion and a profound commitment to lasting change, it can be a formidable force for addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. 💪Thus helping to create a world where communities are active partipants in the decisions that affect them, and share in the knowledge, wealth and resources of society. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 #transformativephilanthropy #slowimpact #whatandhow mc2h foundation #storiesofchange

If you ask me about a social justice approach in philanthropy, I would say it's about addressing the root causes of societal problems. But if you ask me at a deeper level, I would say: ▶️ It moves us from locating the 'problem' with the community, to locating the problem as the system they live in, and this is the critical distinction. So you move from trying 'fix' the community to 'fixing' the system. ▶️You recognise the intersection of multiple systems which are keeping people stuck in inequality. That shift from individual to structural, is moving from equity to justice. ▶️ It has always been an approach used in the history of UK philanthropy, it's part of our revolutionary origins ( Rhodri Davies https://lnkd.in/eg2fFAsb ) ▶️ The approach has been summarised by the Resource Generation, so we don't need to argue about what it means...https://lnkd.in/eF97EUWY ▶️ The philosophical foundations which can be used by funders was described in detail here..https://lnkd.in/eg6FZsrG ▶️ and here's a good summary article https://lnkd.in/emt-VJFX And obviously for me, it's all about philanthropy being truly transformative: https://lnkd.in/eK9tzMRn Enjoy the reading!

✋ This week we would like to highlight one of our partners, African Storybook (Saide). ✨ African Storybook fills a critical gap creatively and comprehensively by providing storybooks in thousands of African languages for children to learn to read and write in their mother tongue. 📖 We’re grateful to be supporting its pilot initiative around a network of Champions in Ghana and Nigeria, who are bringing reach and insight to this ed-tech platform through their local knowledge and networks. 🙌 To learn more about their latest achievement check out the post below from mc2h Foundation CEO, Tara Wondraczek. #theafricanliteracyfoundation #literacymatters #africanstorybook

Advancing Literacy in West Africa Had an unexpected call from Her Royal Highness, the wife of the Tor Tiv (The supreme traditional ruler of the Tiv people), expressing her heartfelt thanks for the outstanding contributions our African Storybook (ASb) champions have made translating storybooks into Tiv! As ASb Champion Coordinator for West Africa, I'm honored to have worked alongside our talented team, especially Terkule Aorabee, who's made significant contributions. I've also translated several stories into Tiv. Recently, Dr. Joyce Dankaro and Msughter Chekwa joined our efforts, achieving over 150 Tiv translations on the African Storybook website. Royal recognition is humbling, but the true impact lies in enhancing Tiv children's literacy. Thank you to the ASb team, our champions, and the Tiv community. 😲 Its been 3 whole years since I leapt - blindly! hopefully! naively! - into the philanthropic space. And with every day that passes, I feel more committed, more grateful and more keenly aware of the responsibility we have to understand more and to learn from the communities we exist to serve. Here are some key lessons that stand out to me, both as a leader of the mc2h foundation and as someone deeply committed to Africa’s future: 💪 “What's strong”, not “what's wrong”: By emphasising what a community HAS rather than what it LACKS, we promote community-driven transformation, viewing communities as vibrant places with capacities, aspirations & resources that can be mobilised & amplified.  ☘️ Change takes time: change takes time and is not linear! But thats ok, and we're here to last that course. The real learning comes from how we respond, adapt and evolve to challenges. This mindset has kept us focused on understanding better, and supporting real, lasting change. 📣 Advocacy beyond numbers: Its not just about the data - there are always people behind numbers, and we work tirelessly to amplify their stories. This helps us bring to attention the staggering fact that 86% of 10-year-olds in Sub-Saharan Africa can’t read.. 🤝 The power of partnerships: Building long-term relationships is critical - we would never dream or dare to do what we're doing without the local knowledge and network that is so critical to lasting change. 📚 Early literacy, lifelong impact: Learning to read early can open doors that last a lifetime. Lliteracy isn’t just a statistic—it’s the key to independence and opportunity for every child.   🌊 The ripple effect: Literacy affects so much more than education - it can impact health, economic outcomes, and gender equality. As such our work is about far more than just supporting children to read—it’s about empowering communities. ⚖️ Transformative Philanthopy: But perhaps what drives me most, is the belief in equitable philanthropy. That is : the deep belief that philanthropy should go beyond grants; it should strive to be a vehicle for lasting change by thinking the way resources and power are shared, and focusing on HOW progress happens, as much as WHAT progress happens. This work has been incredibly personal for me, rooted in my family’s love for Africa, and in our collective responsibility to understand our position and unpick our privelege. Every step is a step towards a future where Africa enjoys a more equitable society and the freedom that comes with being able to read and write. 🌍 📚 ☘️ #LiteracyForAll #literacymatters #readingforall #transformativephilanthropy Thank you to all visionaries and supporters along the way Michael Hacking, Mocoh, Engen
