Are NGOs truly independent or merely prolonged arms of their donors? NGOs play a crucial role globally. They provide services where governments do not, and with their unique participatory approaches, they produce knowledge and critical analyses that help solve development’s most consequential issues. However, despite NGOs’ perceived independence, donors still play an essential role in influencing their priorities, often away from the preferred solutions. This week, on NORRAG’s blog, Batjargal Batkhuyag navigates the challenges NGOs face in maintaining their autonomy against external funding interests, exploring how this can lead to a clash between local needs and donor priorities while offering solutions to bridge these divides. https://lnkd.in/eYbyBUu9 Batjargal Batkhuyag will give a lecture on this very topic this Monday 11 November at 12.30pm CET. Don't miss it ! KIX Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Asia and Pacific (EMAP) Hub

251 million children and youth are still out of school worldwide, as revealed in UNESCO’s new Global Education Monitoring Report. With only a 1% reduction in out-of-school rates in almost ten years, chronic under-investment—especially in lower-income countries—remains a significant barrier. Working alongside the G20 Brasil 2024, UNESCO calls on all Member States to prioritize education and ensure every child and young person has access to learning opportunities. How do mainstream literacy metrics affect the global drive to achieve SDG4 on Quality Education? This week, on NORRAG's blog, Hamza Sarfraz and Zain Ul Abidin assess the foundational literacy and learning poverty concepts. They argue that they are based on unreliable metrics, potentially misrepresenting the actual learning situation on the ground and misguiding education policy and resource allocation 📚 From a striking lack of data to deep gaps in awareness of education outside formal schooling, the authors suggest that such concepts suffer from methodological limitations and should be deployed carefully 📈 👉 https://ow.ly/ULqC50TW3y4
