On the side-lines of #UNGA, Education.org hosted a Ministerial roundtable focused on addressing the urgent needs of out-of-school children. We were joined by #Ethiopia’s Minister of #Education, Professor Birhanu Nega; Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, #Liberia’s Minister of Education; Awut Deng Acuil, Minister of Education for #SouthSudan; and #SierraLeone’s Education Minister Conrad Sackey. The Ministers shared both their challenges and strategies to tackle the issue in a conversation that was frank yet hopeful. There was broad agreement that progress is being made but much more needs to be done, including finding more opportunities for governments facing the challenge of chronically out-of-school children to come together, share knowledge and scale solutions. Among the strategies raised were Accelerated Education Programmes (AEPs), and other speed-learning methods, that support foundational learning at pace and - in the best cases - have been able to get children from not recognising the alphabet to learning to read in ten-months. Minister Conrad Sackey noted the importance of the government's recently launched National Guidelines for Accelerated Education, which were informed by our evidence synthesis on effective AEPs. But it's clear that getting children back into learning, whether in school or an AEP, requires community engagement; meaningful efforts to enable inclusion; all while ensuring the safety of children in and around the classroom. A holistic approach must be taken to address the needs of the most vulnerable children and youth. We are grateful to all those who were able to join us: Jane Mann, Tom Dannatt, Dr Pia Rebello Britto, Susan Nicolai, Sally Gear, Mary Joy Pigozzi, Donnalee Donaldson, Esq., Rt. Hon. Minister Anneliese Dodds, Alicia Herbert (OBE). And thank you to our co-conveners Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies, Global Partnership for Education, International Education Funders Group (IEFG), as well as our visionary partners Porticus, The Rockdale Foundation, Echidna Giving, Dubai Cares, Jacobs Foundation, USAID, and Oak Foundation.
